Police: Rubber Tires Likely Saved Woman's Life

    POSTED: 12:59 pm EDT May 6, 2005
    UPDATED: 1:22 pm EDT May 6, 2005

A woman in Utah was injured when a bolt of lightning blew a hole in her windshield, setting off her air bags as she drove on Highway 201 during a thunderstorm, according to a Local 6 News report.

Police said the strike went through Aline Devaud's windshield Thursday night and took out six chunks of concrete on the road.

Devaud was able to pull her car to the side of the road even though her vision was impaired by the car's air bags.

"Two people stopped who'd seen, came back and told me my car had been hit by lightning," Devaud told KUTV in Utah.

After checking the damage, Devaud noticed that the vehicle's side mirror was torn off by the strike, according to a report.

Troopers at the scene were shocked Devaud survived the strike. They said her rubber tires most likely saved her life, Local 6 News reported.

    weird.

When I was 14, lightning hit a 40-foot mesquite tree that was about 50 yards away from me at the 10'oclock position from where I was walking.

The hairs on my arm stood up and the tree exploded... I dove for the ground out of instinct, landed in the prone position.

A moment goes by and I collect my thoughts... Okay, that tree was just struck by lightning, but I'm okay. I started to get up and then WHAM! I felt like I got a kicked in the face. A chunk of the mesquite tree the size a loaf of bread had been launched by the lightning bolt, and sailed 50 yards right into my face. The bridge of my nose was bleeding profusely, and my glasses were shattered.

It's tragic. That it didn't happen to a Bangled 5 series.

I definately believe it. When I was in grade school, probably 10 or 11, lightening struck in b/w my moms car and another car passing the opposite direction. No more than 7ft in front of each of our cars. It was unbelieveable. Scary but spectacular at the same time.

I was on a business trip to the MS Delta about two years ago during a major rainstorn and I could see lightning striking the puddles of water in the cotton fields that were less than twenty feet from my truck. Needless to say, I had several religious experiences during that drive. :)

Which explains why, to this day, there is no photographic evidence that Dave exists after dark. Every a camera flash goes off, he dives for cover!
