Did my first oil & filter change today in the driveway.

While I was dumping fluids, I also changed the gearbox lube and put in Redline's Shockproof Gear Lube. Wow! What a difference! The gearchange is just so much nicer...sort of 'syrupy'. The balkiness you get from cold is still there, but it loosens-up much faster, and the shifts are like butter. If you haven't done this switch yet....do it.

The lube is blue; I had to stop pouring at first to make sure I had the right stuff. Totally unprepared for what came out of the jug.

As for the oil change, once you've done it, you now know the procedure and it should go much faster than the couple of hours it took me (dropping the venturis and rear pan and then running to Autozone to get a 12mm 1/2" drive Allen socket for the fill on the gearbox).

I could not find Quaker State Q Horsepower 5W-40 synthetic, so I opted for Mobil 1.

Good work Bob. Mobil 1 isn't a bad choice. I was considering using the QuakerState Q Horsepower but was advised not to (I am not sure why since Shell Helix is now owned by them). The RedLine is hands down #1 gear oil in my opinion.

Yep, 5 quarts of Redline is the ticket. Drove it up to Richmond for the Classics on the James and then today for a lunch. The shifting has been absolutely transformed.

BTW, I had a small leak from the dry sump tank. You really need to 'crush' the crush washer that Ricambi supplied with the oil change kit. Once tight, I needed an extra 1/8 turn to really seat the copper washer and stem the drip.

Also, I discovered that the dry sump tank will comfortably accept 9 1/2 quarts when refilling; you need to ease-in the final 1/2 quart so as to not overfill the tank. Don't ask me how I know....

Had Redline gear oil put in at my 30k in June. IF anyone has any complaints about the F1 tranny shifting with hesitation or jerkiness they need to change their gear oil to Redline. Mine shifts so smooth now I can't believe it! :D

I also use the Redline transmission oil. It really improved cold shifting. I also used to be a big fan of the full synthetic Mobil-1. However, when I did my spring 2008 oil change I noticed that the Oil foamed more then usual, and the pressure at idle was slightly lower then usual. After doing some research I found that the Mobil formulation was changed in North America. Since then I have only used Royal Purple in my 348 and in my Porsche 944. Since using Royal Purple the pressure is back to normal and there is virtually no foaming in the tank.

Royal Purple is the go! I was going to get some for my Ferrari, but couldnt have been bothered ringing around trying to find it at the time. :D:D

So I filled up with Mobil 1. I havent had any foaming or oil pressure issues as you describe. But I live in Australia, not North America. :D:D

I asked Ali Hass about Royal Purple, and he mentioned that he tried to obtain technical information about it on several occasions but they were not very revealing so he does not use it. That is not to say Royal Purple is not good oil.

Dr Haas IS the man in the know when it comes to oils! :D:D

What did he reccommend you use Mike? Did he reccommend anything?? :):)

I have only read good reports of Royal Purple and I am sure Ali has also. :):)

And I also understand where he is coming from also not wanting to use it. :):)

I forget what oil he uses in his Enzo? :):)

    This is what he said:

"I have used several products from Red Line and like them all. You can generally use a grade thinner than what other oils would be called for. RL specs are among the best there is. Renewable Lubricants Incorporated (RLI), the oil I use now, is just as good as RL in all respects."

I have never heard of Renewable Lubricants Inc, but if Dr. Hass says it is good then it must be.

Likewise Robbie! Thanks for the compiment on the car. Shoot me an estimate for the interior work. I'll do most all of it: full console and switches, steering wheel shroud, door handles and window switches, all 3 vents. My email is [email protected]. I plan to do it in October.

    Cheers!

I agree, redline is by far the best trans oil out there. I switched to it in my Esprit and it made a world of a difference. The Esprit is known for its horrible transmission, but the switch made it, at least, more usable :). Does no one use Redline motor oils in their engine? I have been using Redline 20w50 ever since I got my car. Wouldn't switch it for anything as far as I'm concerned.

My tech used a German synthetic engine oil called Lubro Moly. Has anyone else heard of this brand?

I used the Lightweight Shockproof Gear Oil, part number 58405 for the gallon and 58404 for the quart. Cost was $75.80 including shipping to Va.
