Hey everyone! I bought my 458 last summer as a CPO car, and I've probably put 1,000-1,500 miles or so on it since. Nothing at the track, just standard driving for fun and no hard or emergency braking or anything. The car is currently on the lift and when I went out to the garage tonight, I noticed that there are little lines in the brake rotors. I've noticed this on my cars with steel rotors before, but as this is my first car with carbon ceramics, I wanted to check and see if this is normal or okay with these rotors. The braking performance is totally fine, and there are only occasional squeaks from the brakes, which I've heard is normal. Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the follow up! I figured they were probably good, but wanted some more qualified opinions.

Carbon ceramics should be weighed to determine replacement time.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but what is Surface Transforms? Thanks, my 458 is also my first car with CCM brakes.

Surface Transform is another supplier of CCM discs (they are OEM for Koenigsegg for instance) which provides aftermarket solutions for Ferrari cars (for which the OEM is Brembo).
The apparent consensus here (which I support) is that Surface Transform is more advanced than Brembo.

  10. And you can refurbish Surface Transform CCB rotors, another advantage. Though the turnaround time can be, to put it bluntly, long.

I should be receiving my Surface Transform rotors shortly, and will install them in my 458. They’re not cheap (around $13k), but my hope is the dreaded brake fade I experience on the track is greatly reduced or eliminated. I wouldn’t make this investment if I were just driving it on the street, but that’s not the case lately.

Doesn’t take but a few episodes of decent brake fade to get one’s attention………..

Hehe, have to correct you here:)

Surface Transforms, with an s on the end, does not manufacture CCM style ceramic rotors, they manufacture CCST style ceramic rotors. CCM which is Carbon Ceramic Matrix is the 20+ year old technology Brembo still tries to pass off as state of the art.

The CCST technology is way more advanced and sophisticated than CCM technology.

Brake fade and failure are two separate things. I’m experiencing brake fade after repeated hard braking, related to overheating of the brakes and rotors. Let the brakes cool and the problem goes away ( temporarily).

I’m under the impression brake failure is a catastrophic malfunction of the ability to slow or stop the car due to mechanical reasons, which I haven’t experienced.

I will, however, follow the recall once it’s out assure the later never happens.

partial loss of braking power is one of the failure modes
    brake booster intermittent seal issue
    could be your culprit
Ferrari has been less than clear on cause/effect with this recall
    Frustrating

Well, I doubt it as it’s pretty repeatable with heat. But no, I can’t say for certain.

Let’s install the ST rotors and see if that makes a difference.

The 458 fade on track is very well known. It's not about the recall failures. They just have poor cooling. Once he's on better discs it will be gone, especially with upgraded RSC2 pads.
