((It got very lively in the skies over New York City today when a wayward Cessna belonging to the U.S. Army strayed into restricted airspace around New York City that was in place to protect the annual U.N. General Assembly, at which President Biden was in attendance.

The light aircraft was intercepted by F-16C Vipers from the 187th Fighter Wing of the Alabama Air National Guard—the famous Red Tails—that were on temporary duty providing air patrols for the high-profile event...)

I guess they’d fly beside him and give hand signals if they couldn’t talk to him. The F-16’s probably have some sort of maneuvers to steer him off course as well. If he ignored all attempts at intercept and continued on toward the U.N., one wonders how far they’d let him fly before shooting him down.

If they did have to force him down or shoot him down, it would certainly be over a very congested, densely populated area.

This takes me back to that day in Feb., 1968 when we were on the roof of the Paine Field hangar waiting for the first take off of the 747. A Cessna 150 managed to intrude into the restricted airspace from the north just before the 747 was cleared. We listened to the conversation between the controller and the student pilot who had no idea where he was. Pain Field is on the shoreline of Puget Sound. After several exchanges in trying help the student pilot figure out where he was , the controller asked the pilot if he could see any water. After a long pause the student said, " Oh yeah, I can see a swimming pool." The controller told the pilot to "Make a turn to 090...that's to your left ,and stay on that heading until further instruction."
