We'll be there mid-May. I've lived in a lot of climates but never the desert... Anything I should know (aside from the fact it will be really hot and my nose will probably be a fountain of blood for a few weeks)?

I'm not fond of spiders and scorpions - is it likely I will encounter them in an apartment or house? I have lived with some monster tropical bugs, and there's nothing as exquisite as waking up with a 5-6in. centipede on your belly. I've heard in AZ, you usually only see scorpions when there is construction in the neighborhood.

Anything else to look out for? We're looking for apts (or house sublet) in Summerlin area or perhaps Henderson.

In all the years I've been in Vegas, I have yet to see a scorpion.

You do need to be aware of black widow spiders. They're usually outdoors in dark places .... bushes, walls, etc. ... so don't stick your hand where you can't see.

Year round but especially in the summer, be sure to be constantly drinking plenty of water, etc. You don't really realize how dry it is, until it starts to get to you.

I also sent you a PM.

If you drink at bars you'll find an adjustment needed that no-one tells you its time to go home.

Don't gamble at casinos, play a little in local pubs if you want for comped drinks but don't get carried away some people get easily addicted to it and need to move out of the State for that very reason, its everywhere, gas stations, drug stores, grocery stores etc.

Be prepared for bad traffic and poor drivers from all over the Country making things even worse.

Watch out for the traffic. 60-70MPH on 25MPH streets is common. There is no law when it comes to traffic. Red lights are always ran. A lot of poeple don't have plates or insurance on their cars. Rear-end colisions are very common also. Wear your seat belt.

Never really seen any spiders, scorpios, snakes or dangerous wild life.

I've been reading the RE articles on the LVRJournal website. Some other people have told me that home prices are expected to drop 8-10% this year.

Does anyone else who lives there think that is true? Is the feeling on the street that things are cooling off?

It doesn't so much seem the the market is cooling off, just leveling out. And watch out for Black Widows and Brown Recluses. Scorpions aren't too common, and no one knows how to drive. If you have lived in a tropical place, like Florida, Vegas heat isn't all that bad. It seems more like walking into an oven, because there is very little humidity.

The market is little bit soft. I flipped one house when it was hot, then sold my present home (one month) but back out in moderate market. As long as there is excellent job market which it is, don't worry, there will be more demand for homes. I believe there is currently over 40 billion worth of projects within the next five years. That will create a lot of jobs.

Any cooling off of the market comes after a 40% increase in median home prices in 2004, followed by 20% in 2005. Some natural correction is to be expected.

I lived in Hawaii for four years, so I'm used to humid, tropical heat, but have only been in real desert heat ~105 for a few days (all of my visits to LV have been in the spring and fall months, and then it is wonderful). It takes some getting used to... but I figure if so many people love AZ, NV, CA desert, you can make it work.

Is it common to carry a weapon, like in Texas?

Prostitution is NOT legal in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas. It IS legal in Nye County where Pahrump is ... about 60 miles west of Vegas.

Of course, that's hardly to say it doesn't exist here.

I lived in Vegas for 7 years and loved it. I only know of one scorpion sting the entire time i was there and rarely saw spiders. I did see a couple rattle snakes while playing paintball in the desert but never near residential housing or anything. As for the traffic, I live in Tucson now and dream of driving in Vegas again. Tucson drivers make Vegas drivers look wonderful. Vegas driving is really not as bad as people make it sound, but definately isn't the best. The best part of the city is the food. You can have any kind of meal you want pretty much 24 hours a day. If you live any where after Vegas, you will definately miss the fact that nothing ever closes. If you live in Summerlin, take advantage of the $1.99 late night breakfast special in the Suncoast Hotel and Casino. For the price, its a ton of food and not bad either.

My onle problem with traffic here is the construction that never seems to end.. The food is VERY good, and now with the new Red Rock opening up in 25 days or so in Summerlin, they have a 4-5 star steak house that is awesome (I've had left overs from when my mom had pre-opening dinneR there). This steak house makes Delmonico's look like crap...

That's pretty impressive, if leftovers taste better than Delmonico's.

Don't know about NV...but here in AZ, Scorpions seem to be everywhere. I hate scorpions. I lived out in the desert and I had scorpions. I moved to PV where there is no desert. Scorpions are everywhere. I talked to my nieghbors. They have scorpions. I have cats...they're supposed to hunt and kill them. Now I have even more. Stupid cats. I even built a house out of Omniblock to help with the bug problems of AZ. Still more scorpions.

Not sure that helps but at least I feel better.

    Just let it all out.

How did your mother feel about scorpions? Did your parents fight about scorpions in front of you? Hmm...

You are definately right about the never ending construction. I swear when I was there DI was under construction about 75% of the time. I remember them finishing one project only to do it all again when they realized they needed sewer pipes underneath the road. The construction gets old real quick but the food and entertainment make up for it ten fold.

I can't recall from my visits, but I assume everyone tints their windows to keep the sun out. I read on a website the limit for the driver is 35%... is that enforced? (I don't know a lot about tint, that could be very dark)

Is tint the same as everywhere else: $100-150? Just wondering if I should do it before the trip, in case the high demand in Vegas meant they charged big bucks.

Thanks for putting up with my random questions.

Yeah pretty much everyone has their windows tinted, and trust me it's needed. As for the tint limit beong enforced, when I was in high school I only knew one person (he had a limo tint) who got ticketed for having his windows too dark. I would say a good 30-40% of the people I knew had illegal tints with no problems though. It's usually not a big deal unless they are really overly tinted.

    Mark

PS: If you want a really dark tint, go to the "Tint Lady." They would tint your windows as dark as you wanted as long as you paid cash.

LOL... funny you mention that. They are now "Tint Devils" - I googled "window tint vegas" and they have an ad at the top. Other places advertised limo tint too, so I don't think there is much fear of the authorities on that.
