Has anyone ever seen this LM002? It was built to compete in the famous Paris-Dakar rally.
I have one picture of it in action:

    And another old one:

Then, 2 pictures when it was up for sale (somewhere), I guess about 5 years ago:

And since about 3 years, it's owned by someone local, but after some initial cleanup, the owner stopped the restoration project, and the car is now for sale again... I was wondering if anyone has more info on the background of that car...

Would be great of someone (Roy?) could snatch this baby up, and give it some TLC it really needs...

I think it's pretty much complete, but it needs to be stripped down, repainted, and rebuilt.
I can ask how much they want for it

I was just wondering. I wonder how beat up it was after that race.

Might be a hell of an "entry" into the LM community.

Ask if they have documentation. I believe this LM was a Swiss privateer prepared car, owned by Guido Pastore at some point. It was done to different specs than the factory prepared car built under the guidance of 3-time world rally champion Sandro Munari (& driven by him). An interesting car nonetheless.

Here is the LM002 built by the factory to full rally spec for Munari. Full roll cage, plastic sliding windows, stripped interior with race seats, rally switches and race timers, auto fire extinguishing systems, large tank, twin spares etc.

Pic shows Sandro Munari behind the wheel.

That's what I heard, built by a swiss team.
Next time I'm there, I'll ask if it now runs again.

That left pic is pretty amazing. Remember this car is a HEAVY piece of machinery.
Back in 03 Valentino drove me and a friend in their black LM from the factory in St Agata to the Detomaso factory as I had an appointment there.
It was raining heavily but he still wanted to show us how the beast performed.
Very exiting to say the least...

The First one is HLA12047 which was prepared to participate as a factory car in the Paris-Dakar rally. The car would be driven by Sandro Munari, horsepower was enlarged until 600Hp, with open exhaust and plexiglass. The car took part in few Rallys in Greece but never took part on the Paris-Dakar rally. Nowadays the car has received a standard engine and is reported as in a collection in Asia.

Second one is the above car (HLA12046) and started in the Dakar rally in 1989 according to one source, in 1995 according to another source. This was a private project and as far as I know the factory was not involved in the conversion. I did some research but the only thing I could find is the start number: 246. Anyone who knows whether the car finished the rally, which year and which rankings? HLA12046 was auctioned by Poulainlefur in Paris in 1998, at that time the car still had the Swiss title. Since then the car was with different collectors in Belgium, last I heard about the car was when it was for sale as a project last year, asking price: 65k euro.

    Kevin:

The Munari LM002 was entered in 2 rallies:

It was entered in the 1987 Rally of the Pharaohs in Egypt from October 18 to October 28, but Sandro Munari decided not to start after the team's sponsor was killed in an offshore powerboat.

It was also entered in the 1987 Rally of Greece, Sandro Munari co-driving with Mario Mannucci, but it was a DNF.

The car remains in a collection exactly the same specification as built by the Lamborghini factory.

The subject of this thread was entered and raced in the Paris-Dakar and was a DNF.

The only other LMs in rallies I'm aware of are the pair in the non-competitive Gumball rally one of which was driven by Ferrari collector & FXX racer Rik Bryan. As far as I recall he says both were a DNF with reliability issues..

    Best,

This was in 2006, I happened to be in London the day before the start of the rally. It was not difficult to find out where the Gumballers were staying so I sneaked into the car park and there I found 2 LM002's parked next to each other.

Interesting that one has rocker flares and the other does not.

The rocker flares are LM002 'American'.

Also the 'bumpers' around front indicator lamps and rear. The alloy wheels were standard on 'American', optional on all others. It also has some 'covers' on the air outlet behind the front wheels, and no 'aluminium tear plates' in the back compartment.
    And bigger mirrors.

'American' were the last 60 (or so) LM002 produced, more luxurious, 'upmarket' and intended for ... (you guessed it) the US market. I think it had all options as standard (?)

Was at the garage today, and this is what the chief mechanic told me:

There were 2 LM's entered in the 1995 Dakar: This white one, and an orange one. The orange one failed early, and the white one supposedly finished the race.

I took some close-ups, most of the car is in "fair" shape, though it needs lots and lots of work to put it right again.

The engine is new, rebuilt countach engine with 600+ HP. Comes with 2 ECUs, one with 7500RPM redline, another with 7800RPM redline.

And as someone asked, car has all paperwork too, including the Dakar history.
