Do any of you know of a website or book I could find all the types of skinks we have around here. All my life I've seen the ones with the blue tails, we even had one as a class pet in 4th grade at NCS. At my GF's house she has one that lives under the siding on the chimney. I've never seen one like it before. It is thick and short with a short tail and an orange head. Its body is grey/brown like a regular skink. I'm trying to get a pic but he is really quick. I would like to know what it is since I've never seen one like it. I think it may be the male five line, the blue tailed ones are also five lines. I wonder if his tail got cut off and hasn't regrown because he doesn't have a long tail like these pics. http://www.cortland.edu/herp/keys/snakliz/efasciat.htm
Southern Coal Skink ( Eumeces anthracinus pluvialis ) <<<< Probably this one Five-lined Skink ( Eumeces fasciatus ) Southeastern Five-lined Skink ( Eumeces inexpectatus ) Broad-headed Skink ( Eumeces laticeps ) Southern Prairie Skink ( Eumeces septentrionalis obtusirostris ) Ground Skink ( Scincella lateralis ) *Alters Circle Jerks tune title slightly* I just want some skink!
Never thought I'd be using my skink knowledge on F-chat, but here goes! The red-headed skink with the broad head is the meal, well, Broad-headed skink. Here's a pic of the male and female: http://www.wildherps.com/images/herps/standard/04050213PD_broad-heads.jpg Big suckers (up to 12 inches long) that can take a nice chunk out of your palm. Ask me how I know! The bright blue-tailed skink is the five-lined skink. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/47/Fivelined_skink.jpg Back in the day, I worked in the herpetology department at LSU and before that as a teen caught all kinds of snakes and skinks to sell to pet stores.
Oh, and I have the book title reptiles and Amphibians of Louisiana that was written by my old herpetology professor at LSU. It has the best color plates of all the indigenous reptiles and amphibians of LA I've ever seen. If you want me to, I can scan and email them to you as I doubt this book is in print anymore.
I think that is the skink I keep seeing. He is way too quick to get a photo and much wider than any of the 5 line skinks I've seen around here. The one we had as a class pet was about a foot long but he was much more grey, but had a big mouth with teeth. The one I keep seeing go into the chimney is about 5-6" long and it looks like something may have taken his tail from him. I would like to see that book if it isn't too much trouble
