    Hello there everybody,

I have got the following issue. My old exhuast system never fitted the exhaust mounts. I suspect that is was due to the fact that it was patched up over and over again. The exhaust system was just supported by the flanges of the manifolds and resting on one side of a chassis bar (the one that carries the anti roll bar)
Buying a new exhaust system (from superformance UK) would solve it.
Well after mounting it, I am still 5 cm (2 1/2") short of getting to the exhaust mounts.
-According to Superformance the exhaust is made according to the specs
-The manifolds seem to be original (so there is no lenght loss there). the rear manifold could have deformed a bit, due to the fact that it had to carry the weight of the exhaust over the years, but 5 cm is just too much
    - The exhaust mounts could have been (re-)located on the wrong spot
    - It is an USA spec car, then it could be that the exhaust mounts have another location and this being an Euro Exhaust system could be the difference

Your opinions are much appreciated, and if anybody has pictures of the location of his exhaust (mounts) that would be great.

    Ricky

    Hi Ricky
I can take some photos and measurements on the weekend. I have a Euro GT4. There is a definite difference between the Euro and US mounting positions relative to the headers. A muffler that fitted perfectly on my Euro did not fit on a US GT4.

If need be, send me a PM as well and I can try to take whatever measurements are necessary on my US GT4 ('79).

    Gerrit,

That would be great! Meanwhile I am awaiting the delivery of Euro manifolds, maybe that will put in greater problems or get the exhaust closer to the mounts. I can´t wait to see you pictures

    Thanks,

    Ricky

By the way I checked your homepage. very impressive!!!!! lay out and information are absolutely profesional and made with a lot of TLC.

    Hi Ricky
Sorry for the delay, I changed my timing belts and idler bearings in the meantime :)
Attached are 4 photos. These are from an unmolested Euro 308GT4 (early 1976).
The distance from rear of RH flange (IOW the left side of the flange on header) to the centre of muffler mounting bolt is 26.25". That is the first 2 photos. On the LH side of car, the centre of mounting bolt is 9" from rear of suspension frame (the one that has the emergency brake cable bushing. The front of the header flange is about 1" to rear of the same frame member. (Second 2 photos).
I don't think the headers would be located differently on the US car (although those are usually covered in Al shroud). I think it is the muffler itself and the frame mounting points that are different. I don't have easy access to a US GT4 at present but I will take photos soon, possibly this weekend.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello gerrit,

No need for apologies. I appreciated the work you have done. Hopefully friday I will receive the new manifold, that together with you info will help solve this problem, I will keep you informed and try to shoot some pictures.

    Regards,

    Ricky

    hay gerritv,

would you mind taking a picture from the rear of your car showing the muffler orientation, and another showing the whole back end of the car? Your pictures got me thinking about rewelding my exhaust...

    thanks - Chris

Thanks again for your input. Today I received the new manifold. as you can see on the picture, there is an angle difference at the location of the flange (flange that connects with the muffler), so that can parcially explain why it could not fit. My guess is that the old manifold has deformed over the years because it was not supported by the mounts.
At least there will be more clearance now with the hand brake cable, as the old manifold was touching/resting on the cable.
Hopefully the angle now with exhaust mounts is right. Still, as you can see on the muffler picture, we had to add 3" more of tube to get near the exhaust mounts (on one side, the other we could not determine until the new manifold arrived, so that is why it is still loose resting on the muffler).

A bit stupid, I forgot to take pictures of the exhaust mounts themselves, but looking at your pictures, I say that the location of the USA & Euro mounts is the same.

I will take new pictures once it is installed, meanwhile I have to look for a new oil cooler.
