I've been troubleshooting the inoperative door open / seat belt buzzer function, and I've found the two wires near the ignition switch that are supposed to connect to the switch shown in yellow in the picture. But I've spent the last 45 minutes with my head under the dash with a flashlight and I cannot find this switch anywhere. I looked and felt all around the ignition switch but there's nothing with spade connectors in the area that I can find. The two wires do have spade connectors on them but aren't connected to anything right now.

The car is a US 89 328. I've seen a number of threads on the subject but they're mostly about the 308's. Anyone have any clues where this switch is on a 328, and what it looks like?

It screws right into the body of the lock. Many were removed and and at some point US locks were NLA and the locks you could get had no provision for the switch.

Look for an empty threaded hole about 6 or 7mm in diameter in the body of lock. It is not in a hard to see place.

Brian, thanks again. Here are two pictures.

First one is of the underside of the ignition lock, reflected in a mirror. Part of the cylinder includes the circled portion. Does the arrow point to where you would expect to see the threaded hole? On the top side of that thing (which you can't see) there isn't any hole either.

The second one shows how I found the wires. The two colored wires are connected to two black wires, which look like they may have been connected to something at some point. There was some electrical tape on the ends that I removed before snapping the pic. I wonder if the rubber boot was intended to cover the connection to the switch.

1st picture is too blurry to tell anything. The rubber boot is from the switch.

Its probably plugging the hole I spoke of. It is certainly not covering the switch. What are you trying to do? Revive the key buzzer?

If so 1st step it to see if a switch is available. They are not hidden. If one was there it would be obvious. 1st step in witch hunts like this is find a car where it works and have a look.

Thanks for that pic, which proves we're looking at the right place. I guess I'll try to see if I can remove the metal part covering the area of the switch, but I tried prying it and it doesn't want to come off.

Yes, I want the key buzzer and the seat belt buzzer (and warning light) to work. Even if they aren't useful, I don't like it when something on my cars doesn't work correctly. None of those things are currently working at all, though if I touch the two dangling wires together, the buzzer comes on. So it ought to work.

However, you said earlier "at some point US locks were NLA and the locks you could get had no provision for the switch." Is it possible this is one of those later replacements without a switch? Does it look original? The key that fits it is not a folding key like most 328's have. My car has a build date of March 89 so it's near the end of production. The key looks like this:

It probably has provision for a switch or there would be no hole to cover.

From post 2 " It screws right into the body of the lock. " I suspect the plug is screwed in.

Might want to look for a switch. They were not supplied separately.

Here is an image of the switch you seek - some years ago I had the original short out; as Mr. Crall notes they were not available individually so I found a used one. As I recall it is pictured in the F40 parts diagram but without a specific number.

It's 115° in the garage this afternoon so I'm not doing anything more until the a.m. Since most people seem to hate that warning siren, I suspect I won't have any trouble finding one in the classifieds.

Great pictures. Now you know what you need. I'd call Brian at T Rutlands. He knows 3 series cars like no other parts guy

Are there any more 328 experts named Brian? If so, we should invite them to participate in the convo and maybe break some kind of record. [emoji846]

No luck unscrewing the cap, if there IS a cap. My eyes and fingers are telling me the whole thing is a solid metal housing. I can't unscrew it with my fingers or with needle nose pliers. Clearance is too tight in there to be able to get any other tool on it for grip. I'd probably need to remove the whole ignition lock from the car in order to get better access, and I'm not willing to go that far. Unless there are more suggestions, I'm going to table this for a while and move on to another project. I appreciate all the help with this!
