I was wondering who here does 200 yards or greater centerfire rifle target shooting?? I'm looking at getting a Savage .223 and I have a question on the scope.

For shooting 200 and 300 yards, what magnification is best? I'm thinking either a 3-10X or a 4-16X. I want to keep my groups small but don't want to get overmagnified if I don't have to. Either the costs go up or the quality goes down. Is 10 power enough for 300yards? I'm getting conflicting answers in my research.

    Thanks!

One of mine is a 6mm that I use 300-600yds. It has a Leupold on it with target turrets.(Id have to look again, but think its 6x20). The 4x-16 you may like for longer shots sometimes, plus at 100yds I use a eraser sized "avery dot" to sight mine in and crank it up all the way. (to really rule out any shooter error).

A suggestion though..........and granted its been a few years since I've purchased a scope........ quality gets you clarity and accuracy. I have both Leupold and Nikon and swear by them. Neither fogs, both have superior optics, and DO NOT change under shock.

    (I can keep my 6mm @ 3/8" @ 100yds, my custom XP100 chambered in a Win348 @ 1/2" @ 100yds on a reqular basis)

Kaamacat, thanks for your quick reply. So your saying that 16 power is needed for shots generally longer than 300yds and not needed for 200-300? Do you feel 10x is enough to be really accurate at 300? I was thinking Nikon as one of my choices as long as it has Parallax adjustment. I'm glad to hear a positive suggestions for it. My other choice is a Mueller.

I generally like the 50 Cal. BMG.
    It’s accurate within a foot or two…… AT ONE MILE ! :)

I'm a High Master in conventional high power long range target shooting and for the few instances I use a scope I use a 16 power at 1000 yards. I consider that a MAXIMUM at 1000 yards. The more power you use the more problems you are going to create for yourself. A good rule of thumb is to use the least power needed. I the situation you describe I would be using a 4x.

The 4-16x will give you more flexability out to 5-800yds or so. You won't need 16x unless you're going beyond 800+meters on a regular basis with a large calibre rifle.

But a 3-10x will do just fine too. 300yds is just warming up.

I once did a guy in Laos from a thousand yards out......rifle shot in high winds.......

There's only 3 or 4 guys in the world who could make that shot!

Using only 4x at 300yrds or even 200 isn't enough, is it? That's like using no magnification at 75 yrds. If I want to keep tight groups, around an inch or so, how can I do that with not seeing the crosshairs exactly where I'm placing them in relationship to the target? Don't mean to sound argumentative, I'm conflicted based on what I think 4x will look like at these ranges and you having such a vast knowledge in this area. If I'm shooting from a benchrest or a bipod at the least, I just don't understand why I wouldn't use more power to see the relationship of the reticle to the target more precisely?

    Thanks for your thoughts!

300 yards is nothing. We qual at 500 METERS with iron sights. 200-300 yards is a piece of cake.
