    Unquestionably, the Beer of choice for me in High School was Heineken Dark.

    In the interest of Science, I'll procure a 6-pack of said bottled product when I go to a controlled environment - more specifically, a retail establishment licensed by Government agencies to sell alcoholic beverages & return to the lab & perform important experiments to see if Heineken Dark is still maintaining quality control standards 30 years later.

    I took a tour of the big Budweiser plant in St Louis last summer and IIRC they regularly freeze "samples" in liquid nitrogen so that comparisons can be made between current and historical batches. I'm sure there is more info available online about just what they do (or don't do) to ensure continuity.

    Yep, an old time fav was Lowenbrau, in the early 80's it was changed to compete with the US swill then it disappeared. apparently it came back recently. haven't tried it again yet.

    If you were a beer drinker back in the seventies, or perhaps just watched TV or listened to the radio, you might be familiar with the above ditty that was heard during commercials for Miller Brewing Company’s Lowenbrau beer. Miller originally contracted with Munich’s Lowenbrau brewery to produce a beer of the same name back in 1975. And you thought contract brewing was a recent phenomenon.

    Lowenbrau (Lion’s Brew in German) has been around since 1893. It’s actually brewed around the world by license to various brewers, so the contract arrangement with Miller was far from something unique. Miller brewed a pale pilsner and a dark lager under the Lowenbrau name, and they were very popular in 12 and 7 ounce bottles.

    A few years ago, Miller lost its license to brew Lowenbrau here in the United States. The buzz is that the powers that be in Munich were not at all happy with the quality of the beer Miller was selling under their esteemed name. Of course, you’ll still see Lowenbrau available on American shelves. That’s because it has also been brewed in Canada by Labatt Brewing, part of the Interbrew conglomerate. Labatt is now producing the Lowenbrau for the U.S. market as well as Canada. They advertise the quality of their brand in the following fashion:

    Lowenbrau is brewed in accordance with the “Reinheitsgebot”, the German purity law of 1516, which stipulates that only the natural ingredients of barley, malt, hops yeast and water be used in the brewing process.”

    Lowenbrau Premium Lager pours to a light golden color with a steady stream of bubbles rising to the top to form a light and spritzy but short-lived head. The nose is light with a faint hint of crisp pale malt, while the palate is light and crisp, smooth and drinkable but not very flavorful. The finish is again light with a touch of balancing hops, but I must say not much is going on in the humulus lupulus department either. Original Munich formula? I’m not sure I can buy that. This beer is far too timid for a German style pilsner; especially one brewed by one of the original and world-famous Munich breweries. Indeed, I’m much more reminded of Labatt’s Blue or the original Carling Black Label than I am a German brew.

    At about $5.99 for a six-pack, you’ll find much more authentic German beers on the market, like Spaten, Konig-Pils, or Bitburger. I’d suggest going with them instead of this German-inspired brew with Canadian flavor.

    Guinness has been around since 1759 and although I can't vouch for it's taste prior to 1980, it tastes the same to me as long as it is properly pulled.

    Although for some reason it does taste a bit better in Ireland!

    With out a doubt the beer i have been drinking regularly for 24 years as changed in tast but then again it could be my tastebuds that have changed.

    Tell me what beer you're concerned about and I'll do some field testnig for you. I drink all sorts; it's something of a hobby, started in Germany in the '80s when I was stationed there. Whenever I visit my favorite uncle he has a variety pack in the fridge for me...did I mention that he's my favorite uncle? :D

    all i can say is, (i'm not a 20+ year drinker) is that here in college, you can't go wrong with the case of natty (natural light) but bud light is the way we roll! (sry to steal the thread)

    Sorry to revive an old thread, but this new section is like a calling for me.

    Guinness that is poured here in the states is not made in Ireland. It is made in Canada. Thats why it taste different.

    Most imports are skunked due to improper handling so I've given up on all of them. Domestics? It's all in the water. I've traveled throughout the US and have "sampled" many a fine brew, my absolute favorite is Full Sail from Oregon. On the other hand, all Oregon beers are excellent! :D

    true story and Guinness in China is brewed there. Also, until the point where the Canadian brewery opened all of our Guinness came from England anyway.

    when i first started drinking beer in the '50s the local brands were very good and flavorful. as time went on and the mass produced beers became popular the taste became weak and watered down. then came the awakening in the 80s with the advent of small batch breweries and beer started to taste good again. luckily there are enough real beer drinkers to support these new brewers and happily the few surviving small local breweries that still produce their old recipes.     Guess it doesn't count that I would get small swigs from my parents, grandparents,uncles and their friends when I was really little (1 or so). lol :D

    And had my first taste of whiskey when I began teething. My mom said I loved it.
