Definitely above. According to Octane magazine a couple of months ago it is about GBP 1.5 million IIRC.

Doesn't anyone else find it amazing how James Bond and Sean Connery look and sound the same?

I thought one of the Aston's were stolen? Didn't that one have all of the cool features like the rotating license plate, "bullet proof" windscreen, oil slick, machine guns, and champagne bucket in the arm rest? Ok I don't remember if it had the champagne bucket, but it's 007 I'm sure there's a spot for it somewhere.

Funny, I'm watching the Bond-a-ton thingy on AMC right now, and James Bond looks more like Roger Moore, and earlier Pierce Brosnan. Must be the disguise skills of Q.

I saw some documentary thing on the Bond movies, Ian Fleming said something like Bond is more like Roger Moore than Sean Connery because Moore is a bit more subtle in his ways. But didn't Fleming create the Bond character based on him?

Jeez what a trove of misinformation that "documentary must have been. James Bond was created in 1953 with the publication of the book "Casino Royale". Sean Connery was not an actor at that point. Bond was described by Ian Fleming as looking like a young Hoagy Charmichael (a musician and actor of the 1940s and 50s who wrote the song "Stardust", "Georgia on my mind", and "The Nearness of You" among others). Ian Fleming was appalled at the choice of Sean Connery to play James Bond, but after meeting him on the movie set decided that he liked him and that he was suitable to play 007. Ian Fleming died long before Roger Moore played James Bond.

That said, I have high hopes of Daniel Craig as the new Bond. I know what you're thinking... "Who??" See "Layer Cake" and you'll understand.

About the DB5, I hate that the Bond lure has completely overshadowed a great classic and now there is no discussion of this beautiful car other than oil squirting tailpipes and razor blade knock off hubs.

He's either going to be pretty good, or truly awful. I have my doubts, I watched a press conference with him when he was introduced as Bond, and he's not too smart. But he is a good actor, so there's hope.

Anybody know what Bond actually drove in the books? Two different Bentley cars, a pre war 4 1/2 liter supercharged and a later "R" type after the 4 1/2 liter was wrecked. He borrowed an Aston Martin DB2 Mk3 from the Secret Service motor pool (some motor pool) once.

So this is the one that's in the museum in tenneseee. I remember seeing it in that musseum when I was a kid. I think it was around 87 or 88. I still remember it quite well. It's kind of a shame it's going up on the auction block. Probably will end up in a private collectors hands never to be seen again.

    Ryan,

You are right and it is even listed on the site...

"This car was last known to be a part of a private collection in Florida, from where it was stolen out of a locked aircraft hanger in 1997. It is reported that an insurance settlement in excess of $4,000,000 was reached following the car’s disappearance. Many believe that it will never be seen again. The second car, DB5/1486/R, was delivered to the producers in standard form and used in the films strictly as a fast driver (unburdened as it was, by the extra weight) and known as the ‘Road Car.’ 1486/R was later fitted with a set of gadgets installed by Aston Martin (which differed slightly from the engineering of the Effects Car), to take advantage of the global publicity juggernaut for the DB5. (Ironically, when the Effects Car was returned to Aston Martin after its workout in Goldfinger and Thunderball, the gadgets were removed by the factory so the car could be returned to ‘civilian’ road use!) For the worldwide debut of Thunderball, two more Bond DB5s were produced to order for Eon Productions (via their Swiss-based holding company, Danjaq S.A.) and ‘accessorized’ by the factory for promotional use. These were equipped with gadgetry to the exact same specification as Aston had developed for their own promo car, 1486/R. Known as the ‘Press Cars,’ DB5/2008/R and DB5/2017/R were dispatched to America, one to the East coast and one to the West. With Thunderball onscreen in every town in 1966, the Press Cars were kept very busy with national and local appearances and a cross-country tour. Sears Roebuck took one of the cars on tour, housed in its own customized transporter, the rear panel proclaiming, ‘YOU’RE TRAILING AN ACTUAL JAMES BOND 007 ASTON MARTIN AUTOMOBILE – SEE IT AT SEARS!’ Mike Ashley, factory sales representative for Aston Martin, was given the job of accompanying the promo tour."

So Im guessing the most important one of the bunch and that made the legend, ( the one with all the toys, ) is sitting next to James Dean's 550, the car Hoffa was last seen alive in, Jesus' chariot, etc...

This car that's for sale - #2008R - is one of two post-production mock-ups made for Eon Productions (the other one is #2017R) to publicize Goldfinger. They were not used in the film itself.

For the film there were two cars - an "effects" car (#DP216/1) and a "road car" (#1486R). The E-car was fitted with all the gadgets and used for interior/closeups; the R-car was used for distance shots and stunt-driving (and was also the car used for the beginning of Thunderball.

PHOENIX - The Aston Martin spy car from the James Bond movies "Thunderball" and "Goldfinger" — complete with machine guns and tire slashers — sold for $2.1 million at a vintage motor cars auction here Friday

The winning bidder for the 1965 Aston Martin DB5 was not identified by RM Auctions officials.

It is one of only four cars originally constructed and used for 1964's "Goldfinger" and 1965's "Thunderball" as well as promotional tour use. The auction car was primarily used for promotion.

Some of the special James Bond options on the Aston Martin include Browning machine guns, a wheel-mounted tire slasher, a retractable rear bulletproof screen, an oil slick ejector and a smoke screen system.

Formerly the property of Sir Anthony Bamford, the famed James Bond Aston Martin was one of several celebrity cars offered from Tennessee's Smoky Mountain Car Museum, where it has been on display since the late 1970s.

Also at RM Auction's one-day event at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa, Al Capone's 1928 Cadillac Town Sedan sold for $621,500 while Hank Williams Jr.'s 1964 "Silver Dollar" Pontiac convertible was auctioned for $214,500 and a 1934 Packard Twelve Runabout Speedster sold for $3.2 million.
