Well I mainly reside in Puebla, Mexico now although I keep my US bases in Houston and Miami, anyway, the Ferrari Dealer here in Puebla is on my way home so I check it every day, its been a while seen I have seen any new Ferraris there besides an Enzo that was waiting transport to be taken back to the customer (Ferrari service is anly done here in Puebla at the Ferrari of Mexico headquarters). Last night I saw the guys there taking in an Stradale and well I just had to sop this morning to take a peek, the things sounds great. I also loved the Yellow Modena, should I get a twinkie from the one I got in Miami? They are throwing a great deal on that one... mmmhhh

    Frissen,

Do you keep your Ferrari in Mexico? My father lives there and is considering a purchase but would rather keep it in the states. Any pitfalls to having a Ferrari in Mexico, specifically DF and the outlyoing areas withing about two hours drive?

    thanks,

    Vincent,

My family is originally form Mexico and I still have a lot of friends there. I would not recommend having and exotic car in DF. With all the assaults, kidnappings, etc. It would be like advertising, “hey come get me”. As for other parts of the Country, it will depend, I would think that Monterrey, NL I would be okay.

I never had an F-car here in Mexico and after driving a Modena in DF I don't think I would. Although there are several people who own them, they all have different feelings about it.

I will be adding opinions as this thread continues.

DF is certainly difficult, but Monterrey is not far from DF although better than Guadalajara.

A Ferrari certainly advertises "come get me" but think what the criminals are thinking also, "Who I'm getting that drives a Ferrari". Daily criminals want the easy pray, silver Jetta use to be the most looked after car for criminals in DF now is the MINI, :( I'm sad because I drive one. So a Ferrari may not be neccesarily dangerous to drive on the short run, certainly difficult with no parking, terrible traffic and horrible streets. I had a terrible time driving a Modena for lunch in Polanco, I suffered more than enjoy.

Having spent a lot of time in Monterrey on business, I would compare it to most large US cities - good areas of town where you would have no problems, and bad areas of town that should be avoided. The roads there are as good as any US city from what I have seen. One exception is when it rains - for some reason the roads turn slick as ice and wrecks are everywhere.

I agree but only to some extenet, there have been a lot on influtential people who have also been ransomed. Remember there is an equation called risk vs. reward.

Certainly Ferraris do exist here in Mexico and thay are driven to some extent. Ferrari Mexico (Scuderia Italia) sell about 20 a year, nonetheless during 2002 and 2003 the government permited personal import from europe of a car, in what manufacturers called "gray market", and I have to say that at least 40-60 Ferraris were imported within those two years.

I have one too many stories about Ferraris driven here in Mexico, all I can say is that is hard to do it, the street conditions are bad, the security is a concern among other things that make having such car more of a pain than a reward.

There was one Modena here in Puebla that was used regularly, after a suspension broken and a couple of wheels among other problems I never saw the car again.

There is one Modena in Veracruz, the streets are better tha other places in Mexico, they have a track near by and at sea lvel full power of the Modena can be enjoyed. When I drove in this guy's C2 and he did a run in Modena, I gave him a run for his money, then again I'm "The Porsche Specialist". When we pulled at the gas station the Modena didn't make it, it scraped the bottom a little bit and saw it would not make it so he left it by the street.

During a Porsche event seating in a large table, the Ferrari topic came up, and I added thay were too handcrafted still, one Modena owner concured and added that he always has problems with the clutch in DF and aircon among noises and such.

Finally I met a guy with a 575M, very nice guy and 2000 kms on the odometer within a few months of purchase. No complaints here.

So, a Ferrari is very doable in Mexico, annual registration of about 10% a year will kill most of us in the long run, insurance about the same, added bad streets and insecurity and the equation comes out pretty bad, but is doable. Here I am doing it.

    thanks everyone,

You're confirming our train of thought about keeping a Ferrari in Mexico. His current plan is to buy it in the states and keep it at my house. We have had our share of problems when it comes to vandalism, kidnapping etc. and the less attention the better.

He'll have to visit more in order to drive and that's a good thing. Of course, someone will need to exercise it regularly. :)

Yeah, I think you will enjoy it much more over there, and leave the armored Passat for DF.
