the home of my ex-wife was broken in couple days ago "during the morning hours". most important thing, no one was hurt.

i am looking for a reasonably priced yet solid and reliable home security system (nothing too elaborate). could someone suggest one? thanks in advance.

I've always used ADT. I like the service and I haven't ever had any problems. I'm sure Brinks is good too.

Good to hear everone is OK.

All systems are ok for making noise to scare off kids. A professional theft disarms the system by cutting the phone lines or turning the power to the home off. I have a cellular back-up hidden in my attic and a battery that keeps the alarm operational for 72 hours after a power failure. The extras added $1500 to the system, but IMO made is a security system instead of a feel good noise maker. Adding the extras reduced my insurance about $200 a year beyond a normal alarm system, so it will pay for itself in 7.5 years.

    Sorry Tom,

I'm more on the elaborate / overkill side, so I can't help much.

I think ADT systems are ok. You just have to be careful about the contract and all the items that are "extras".

thanks, eric. like me, the x-mrs really doesn't have much valuable assets to protect but it's for safety & security concerns. afterall, we have a 13yrs old little girl.

ordinarily, it's a relatively safe neighborhood with lots of stay at home moms, one of whom happened to I.D the suspect and motives. detectives are discreetly working on it and the case is under investigation w/ the DA office.

take care of yourself. have a great weekend everyone.

    I understand.........

I'd select one with wireless panic button
    Cut line detection
two way conversation with monitoring company
good cellular phone and signal as backup

Yes, I do consider this underkill........ but these would be the good things to have if life is what you are trying to protect.

You might want to install a secure door for a closet locked from the inside as kind of a safe room.

Was anyone home when the breakin occured? Did they take anything? They have a positive ID and motive? That's great.

Also, don't under estimate the value of aware neighbors.

    Good Luck........

I think ADT is rated no 1 in the US but I have Brinks. Windows, doors, motion, glass break sensors. Service is good. Worked out a deal w/ the installer to do "add-ons" for less directly from him. My German Shepherd & Lab in the backyard work well too. BTW: not worried while I'm home w/ S&W & Rugar 357s in the bedrooms.

If you are looking for a good brand consider DSC. Their 832 system offers many zones, expandability plus options such as cellular monitoring, fire, flood, etc. You then choose whom you wish to monitor the system. Usually under $20/mo. The monitoring company is what really ices your cake and there are large differences regionally within the same company/franchise.

Many of the 'big names' rebrand other manufacturers product and simply supply/install/monitor/program. You do not neccessarily need to pay a premium for a 'brand name' installation.
