I am looking at a 1983 512BBi that has 18,000 miles. What are the problem areas? What kind of questions should I ask? How much is a belt service?
What are good info sources on this model?
    Thanks for the help!

Engine out belts, start at around $5k and and up depending on what it needs, everything is very expensive and can be hard to find certain parts.

Weak areas clutch, electrics, water pump and cooling issues and anything else can happen as they are an older car now.Look for rust in the frame or where the aluminum hood and rear deck meet the steel framing on them.

Mel Nichols book on the Boxer is very good but stops at the 512BB.

Find the service records and history any accidents?

That said they are about as close to a late 60s early 70s Ferrari race car as you can get, no turbos and great road view and sounds, you almost feel as though you are riding bare back on a 12 cylinder, my car is carbed and it's great how it revs up and down instantly.

    How much is he asking?

    Copyboy,

Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions. I bought a 1983 Boxer last November that had 11K original miles on it and LOTS of service records.

When going over the records on that car, check to see if the original "steel" fuel injectors have been replaced with newer "brass" Bosch ones.

When they go bad.... and they will fail eventually... (ask me how I know), you are looking at $1,000.... just for the parts.

Check out the picture with the VIN - the exhaust looks quite corroded.

My guess is it's had alot of the $9,700 tuneup in service cleanup - fresh paint, glossy parts replaced and what's under the shag carpet?

I'm always suspicious but think you'll find a lot of suspension bits and the chassis corroded underneath. PPI/visual on a lift needed.

$83k is a lot for without talking to the mechanic's who've worked on it, inspection, and eyeball the records.

No pictures under the spare tire cover, no pictures of the supposedly complete tool kit, lots of info missing.

Although at $50k, hmmm. (I know - "buy price, buy twice").
