I am looking at a 1990 TR listed for sale from an authorized Ferrari Dealer. I got my hands on the maintenance records, reviewed them and wanted to get some input on some concerns I have after studying the receipts. The car has approximately 9,500 miles on the clock and was a two owner car serviced at authorized Ferrari dealers all the way through.

There was a major service done in 2003 (at approximately 8,200) miles. It included all of the belts, fluids (oil trans, coolant) water pump rebuild, cam seals, valve adjustment, replace frozen idlers, S. Plugs, Air Filter, Fuel Filter, Brake Fluid.

Then, when the dealership who has the car now took it in back in November 2011, they pulled the engine again at 9,500 miles and replaced all of the belts, fluilds (oil, trans, coolant) set cam timing, flushed brakes. They also performed a four wheel alignment and replaced the fan control resistor pack, hood struts and a few other items. They did NOT rebuild the water pump again (they inspected it and found it NOT to be leaking). They did NOT replace the cam seals again (they inspected them and found them NOT to be leaking). I do not see any records of the clutch being replaced. (They state that they checked it and found it have plenty of life remaining).

Should I be concerned that even though it was only 1,300 miles of driving, between 2003 and 2011 that the cam seals and water pump were not replaced and rebuilt respectively again? Should I also be concerned that there is no mention of the coolant hoses or fuel hoses being replaced? I realize that this is "while you're in there type of maintenance," but am concerned that these items may haunt me if I buy the car and drive it (which I intend to do).

    Feedback please.....thank you. -Eric

My answer is no on yor questions.... but that cant help you at alll ... you take the risk always yourself buying that car :)

But why a Testarossa and not a much newer 512TR ?

Did you ever examine them both; found all the enhancements ?

I like the 512 TR and I do understand and appreciate the enhancements that were included with that model, but I have a real attraction to the earlier cars mainly because of the impact they had on me when I was younger. My neighbor bought a black/tan 89 TR brand new and I can remember the first time I saw it. I walked into the garage on a cold New Jersey winter evening and when I saw that car, time stopped. The image of that car was seared forever in my 11 year-old mind and I swore I would have one just like it one day.

I realize the 512 may be a better performer, but in some ways I almost appreciate the smaller wheels, more traditional steering wheel and simpler design of the first generation TR's. I suppose it's all what stirs your soul. For example, all of the new sports cars out there on the market are nice and perform very well;(I have owned a few of them myself) but they do not really appear to have much personality. It's almost as if they are "too good." The older cars have personality and character. Their flaws almost add to their personality in some strange way. The TR is all character and soul. I have been hooked for 23 years.

The same thoughts led me to my 1990 TR.
