I will be looking at a 82 Mondial 8. It has 31k on the clock and he did perform the 30k server a few years ago. Any tips and or advice anyone can give me when going to look at this vehicle?

There are many things you should be concerned with....

    Two very important things....

    Documented service history

Have a PPI done by a mechanic who is familiar with the vehicle

In addition to the usual Ferrari things (mentioned below to include cam belts and tensioners), Mondial specific areas:

    1. cycle and test EVERY electrical switch, including sunroof and glove compartment and especially stalk switches. EVERY switch.

    2. Look at the fusebox. Take off the cover and look at the condition of the metal on the fuse clips. ESPECIALLY unseat and examine the white plastic vertical connector that is on the most inboard aspect of the box. The fuel pump connection is not up to the amperage draw and many will be burned out needing replacement.

    3. Did I say cycle EVERY piece of electrical equipment? EVERY piece?

    4. Be sure to try to start it when it is warm. After a test drive, turn off the engine and chat for 5 - 10 minutes. That 5 - 10 minutes will see if the FI will hold pressure neccesary for a hot start. Then try to start the car

    5. Cycle EVERY electrical switch - even the mirror adjustment. EVERY switch.

Good luck !!!!! - they are great cars for real adult drivers who want a real GT for the real world.

The hoses on mine were pretty shot, so you might check to see if there are any coolant or oil leaks. The lower line to my oil cooler was worn almost through where it had rubbed on the clutch housing, and the coolant lines were pretty hard and old. Some locations had been double-clamped to try and stop coolant leaks. I replaced all of the hoses, including all the fuel lines, about a year ago.

Thank you all for the feedback. I am going to look at it Thursday. The owner will get a PPI done at a location of my choice.

    Any recommendations?

I would NOT take it anywhere that knows the current owner....avoid any conflict of interest so you get an honest evaluation of the car's faults. Its YOUR PPI, not the owner's, so you should have a long list of things to be evaluated on the car.

Look for the original (315mm I think) metric tires. I looked at an 82 mondial a few months ago and it had original metric tires that were being driven on daily! Not good.

I went and took a look at this yesterday.
Visually from the outside it looks pretty good. Black with tan interior
    All switches work
The windows are a little slow but from what I am reading that is normal and possible to fix.
New fusebox, front brakes and battery installed about a year ago.
What I noticed that seems bad:
Driver seat has a rip about 4-5 inch in the middle of it
when you open the doors they pop a couple of times
the hoses look like they would need to be replaced
I see a lot of foam type white stuff coming out of where all the gaskets are. Normal?
It starts up pretty weak. Its starts that way weather its cold or hot.
When you shut the car off it seems backfire
    The tach bounces around sometimes
He said when its cold it does not like to go into second. I think its hard to get it into any gear sometimes
The clutch is very hard to push in
Hard to explain but When turning the wheel to make turns it seems like about half way through the turn the steering wheel pops like it has a stopper then lets you go past it. It does not correct it self when turning.

Any of this stuff sound major? What would this car be worth?
Sound like I should stay away?

Thank you all in advance for your help and comments.

NOT NORMAL! What gaskets in particular? Hope you don't say head gaskets.

Is this the black Mondial on Craigslist?

    http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/car/366061700.html

    Here's my thoughts

Don't worry - as long as the switches work, that's what matter. The windows will be slow, but there are things you can do to make them a little faster.

New fusebox is good news. The question is why was it changed? Front brakes are easy, but nice to have. Newer battery is good, but make sure it was installed correctly and that the battery hold-down and cover is in place.

If it's at the stitching, an upholstery shop should be able to fix this for not too many bucks. (or go over the border and it can be done cheaply.) But if it's in the leather itself, you may need to sew in a new piece of leather.

Seems that the door hinge/detent mechanism hasn't been lubricated and has dried out. When you work on the window motors, you can lube these up and see if that helps.

There is a thread on this forum about silicone hoses. You'll want to do those. Figure on $300 and your own labor or about $1000 for a shop to do it for you (you supply the hoses.) If you go with the stock Ferrari replacement, you'll be paying about $900 for the two 5' long pieces of hose alone, plus the labor to install.

Not normal at all. Did the current owner try some additive as a stop-leak? I would be very concerned about this. Also, if he did, what else was leaking?

Sounds like the starter motor is going out. Especially if there's a new battery under the front bonnet.

Is it running rich? Could you smell excessive fuel? Sounds like it needs a tune.

Doesn't seem normal - may be a bad electrical ground, bad sending unit - my tach is nice and steady always.

When cold, this is common. A fix is to change the gear oil with Redline synthetic. This helps for most people.

Sounds like the clutch is at the end of its adjustment and it may need a clutch. The clutch on the Mondials are hydraulic and should not be very hard to depress.

Sounds like there are a few issues here. There could be a balljoint issue, or a steering rack issue, or even an A-Arm bushing issue causing the popping noise. The non self-centering of the wheel could be a problem with the suspension, or simply an alignment issue (toe-in issue.) The question I would have would be, "Has the car ever been in an accident? Why is the alignment not set correctly?"

Also bear in mind that the Michelin TRX tires on the car have a good amount to do with that as well. They are old and newer rubber will help.

Depends on how much stuff you do yourself. You REALLY need to pay a professional to PPI the car for you. When you do, they'll provide an estimate. I think in North San Diego county, there's a new shop called Canallo Motorsports? I don't know a thing about them, but if you go to the SoCal section, there's discussion about them. Whomever you choose, make sure they know the older Ferraris and they can perform a PPI for you.

On the Mondial 8s, you'll want to have the shop doing the PPI do a compression and leak-down test as well. The 2V motors were known to be oil burners.

If this is the car on Craigslist, I believe the owner is asking $18K. Depending on what the car needs, I think it would be worth much less than that. Remember, the Mondial 8 is the least swift of the Mondials and consequently, the least desireable of the series. If I had to guess (assuming the car needs a clutch, a starter motor, and a major service, I'd probably only offer in the $13-14K range provided that the rest of the car is clean. And I'd be prepared to spend $6K in service and $2K for new tires and wheels.

Im not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to cars, but it looks like a liquid type seal around all the parts that connect. Some of it looked newer some looked much older as it was more yellow in color.
