Trading up from my sl500 for a daily driver. I’m looking at a 03 911 turbo, gray/saddle, tiptronic, 29k miles. Carfax shows no accident. There were 8 service records, which concerns me a bit for probably no sound reason. Is it normal for the 996 turbo to be service for every 5k miles or so?

Carfax shows 2 owners both registered as lease vehicle, would this have any effect on the car’s value? Assume everything checks out after ppi, what would be the fair price for this car? Thanks in advance!

(Also, were there significant changes on quality/performance improvements in the 996 line-up? If so, which year? I’ve seen some suggest to buy only 02 and newer.)

'01's had bumperettes, so people dont like those. also no glovebox i think. the 03's and '04's had fiber optic stereo wiring, which makes aftermarket stuff, just a little trickier.

'04 had standard navi, which sucks anwyays cuz its CD based, but it does work. it was an option in '03. there aren't huge differences between the cars.

as far as reliability, they are considered pretty bulletproof. i put over 50k on my '04 in less than two years and drove it through a lot of snow. you can find a lot more info on the porsche forums like 6speedonline.

the service intervals are very infrequent, like every 15k. that does sound liek a lot of services, but maybe they were anal and did more oil changes than required.

not sure how much it shoudl be worth. saw some crazy prices for cars recently, so anybody's guess. i'd say in the high 40's or low 50's, but i maybe out of touch here.

I wouldn't be too quick to assume it was an "anal" owner on a leased vehicle... Take a better look. Could be a plus or a minus...

They are GREAT cars, but be sure and buy a good one that a really competent 996 Turbo mechanic has checked out well. You could get nav in the '01 cars too. A friend of mine had it in his. Love the cars and they are damn affordable these days! As noted in the $40k range EASY to find (but may not be all that nice cosmetically and/or mechanically).

Good luck! Find a good one and you will LOVE IT!

    Thanks a lot, guys!

How can I tell apart about a car being good/ok/bad MECHANICALLY? I never bought a pre-owned before. I understand the ppi will tell a lot. But aren't there things that just won't really show on paper. For instance, my older sl had no issue shown when someone did the ppi on it. However, having owned since new, I know the car doesn't drive the same as it did new. One problem was that the car would stay on pretty high rev after start. So since I don't have tremendous hands on experience with 996 turbos. How should I prepare myself?

Btw, dealer is asking around 54k. What's a good counter price to start with? The car looks pretty clean, not many options or mods. Tires seem be pretty worn.

with this economy, my offer would definitely be in the 40's. lots of cars out there, and a lot fewer buyers. tires are like $1k right there.

Thanks for all the info. I've been using auto trader to locate cars. Any other good sources out there, other than dupont, ebay?

I once owned a 6 year old car that had been to the dealer 39 times, just for service, quirks, tire rotations, oil changes etc. I also had a 9 year old car in 46 times for the same reasons, just maintenance.

I've had cars several years old with a short but very expensive service history... the cars were on the verge of being lemons with less than 10 vists over the course of 5 years.

It depends on WHY the car has the service history... itemize the list and let us know the high and low points of the history. A car like this will need majors and has its flaws too. Make sure the car get s a serious PPI from a shop that knows the make and model well.

ouch! i owned my '04 turbo for 56k miles. it went to the dealer for scheduled service only. not one other item broke.

i forget what the exact services, but it was few. 15k, 30k, 45k. so i think it was at the dealer a total of 3 times!

at the 45k i had brake flush, alignment, and coolant flush. it was fine til i sold it at 56k miles. i dont think i would buy another if i had to go to the dealer 40+ times!
