Does anybody have an ML 320 diesel they can comment on? It drove well on the test drive but I'm wondering what the real life mileage and other reactions to the diesel are. Thanks.

We got one for my father when they first came out. He thinks it's the best car in the world. He's a total geek, though, so keep that in mind.

He averages about 24MPG in mixed driving, but he drives like the grandpa that he is (maybe even a little slower). I am driving it from Houston to Dallas tonight, and have made that trip in it before, and with my heavy right foot, I still keep it in the mid-20's on the highway. It rides nicely, but the steeing is a little numb and the brakes don't feel so great. The power, especially mid-range passing, is great. It's got all the right bells and whistles and has plenty of space.

I can't really fault it for what it is. I wouldn't buy one for myself as a daily driver, but that's just a personal preference. Now if they made a ML320 CDI AMG, I might change my mind...

Thanks for the comments. This is a pure crappy weather and ski vehicle for me. I pretty much think all SUV's suck so I don't worry to much about feel and so on. I wish diesel hasn't jumped so much. I just filled my big truck at $3.91/gallon. Gas is about 15% less for Premium. The 350 is just a little short on power at this altitude and the 550 is a 15MPG affair. Hard not to think about what the numbers would be if diesel was still 10-20% less than gas.

Say hi to Jeff M. I bought his Gallardo.
