Been looking at a 02 Spyder 6 speed manual. Looking at the photos and talking with the seller I noticed a few blemishes. The conv top had a cut in it and it was repaired before he bought it. He says it doesn't leak or make wind noise but it's still not a perfect top. Car is priced at what I determine as fair. But what is the value of the less than perfect top. Can the fabric be replaced or is this part of the $20,000 nightmare I read about on a another thread? Are soft tops with tears common enough that it isn't a huge sore thumb if I decided to resell this car later?

Maserati made such huge strides in the Spyder beginning with the '03 model year that unless this '02 is a truly smoking deal then I would compare one before making a final decision (but I understand that may not be possible in your situation). Also, I am not a big fan of the 6spd manual cars, the clutch travel is excessive, the gear lever throws are long and the second gear synchro is weak (from a "grinding perspective", I've never seen our shop replace internals of the trans which is good) All in all they are very fun cars to drive but I just wanted to warn you of a few pitfalls if you haven't driven one yet.

Thanks, I just don't get excited (at all) about the paddles. Actually your discription of the 6 speed faults reminds me of my old Porsche 911SC (lol) Ive looked at a few and spoke with a few of the guys at Ron Tonkin and their experience has been minor & good with the 02 Spyders. What type of noticable changes were made with the 03? From my reading the 02 is more desireable for the extra rpm limits and overal better performance. (TRUE?)

I prefer the Cambio Corsa's shifting program of the '02s but since you're not interested in the CC it's a moot point. In my opinion there were two major strides for the '03 model year; the chassis rigidity was increased approx 25% and the plastic rear window was replaced by a nice glass window wth defroster. It may sound trivial but I think those items really improved the car.
