I want to get a new set of speakers. I currently have a set of Bose 301v series speakers that I use for surround sound on the TV, as well as for listening to music from my ipod and computer. I like them, but am looking for something possibly a little louder, that sound even better.

I know there are lots of people out there who hate Bose…so let’s hear the other suggestions! They don’t have to be bookshelf speakers, so floorstanding works too.

I will mostly be using them to listen to music from an ipod, as well as an IBM notebook computer with a high definition audio card.

    Also….any receiver ideas?

Looking to spend no more than 1k on the speakers.

    Brian,
No specifics on models, but working within your generous budget, consider B&W, Canton, JBL, Altec Lansing, Klipsch speakers: and Denon, or Pioneer receivers.

    BriSalig,

Too many to note. One of my reviewers has many articles dedicated to nearfield and computer audio. His name is Steven Stone and he writes for various publications from audio to video to guitar (he's a great guitarist and collects $$$$$ guitars).

His articles are called The Nearfield and have an archived listening at http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/archives/viewpoint/other.htm . Always glad to help.

Oops, forgot to mention these http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/0706/audioengine_5.htm . For a mere $350 they are truly amazing and i'd put them up against speakers 2 to 3 times the cost. They also have built-in amplification so you can use your computer's volume adjust. Frankly, they are so good they will be my mainstay for the MANY weeks i plan to be on the road in my custom enclosed trailer while going to track events this year.

I have a Home Theatre Co. (Which I won't spam here) And I would suggest [for the money] something simple yet of great quality: Polk Audio, or Yamaha. For the receiver we don't 'Do' the receiver anymore but it sounds like you need total integratability like Yamaha's RX-V2700....

If you have an HD Audio card, you can simplify the wiring with this unit.

Bose is great for clarity, but not for output unless you upgrade $$$

They are a bit expensive, but Bang & Olufsen are, in my opinion, the absolute best available. I was visiting their store in West Palm Beach on Sunday after Cavalino. Their speakers and TVs are absolutely beautiful, but they also sound AMAZING and the picture quality of the TVs is just stunning. I was in the store for a good 30 minutes just drooling.

    Hope this helps,

    John

If you can afford it, Rotel equipment goes great with B&W speakers.

I went with Definitive Technology speakers for my TV/Xbox set-up and have been thrilled.

This is WAY over the $1,000 limit (at the $22,000 list price sales tax will set you back $1,300 alone) but this is a way to match the garage to the home theater.

IMO, the main thing with speakers is listening before you buy - and with YOUR amp / processor if you can. Check out AVS forum, Home Theater Forum for more insight. Do a search and you'll find tons of comparisons in this price range.

I feel that Bose is NOT a great buy at any price. Those little cubes do only one thing well, be small.

<$1,000 will get you a good set of B&W, Paradigm, Definitive Tech, Atlantic Tech. Lots of reviews out there, check around.

At this price, my vote goes for the Paradigm Reference Studio 40's V2.

Rotel amps make almost EVERYTHING sound great.....I have their 200x5 paired with Paradigm Reference all the way around and the Paradigm PW2200 sub. LOUD, no distortion, great at low volumes...couldn't be happier.

Speakers come in Rosso Corsa, Argento Nurburgring, Grigio Silverstone and Nero

They were in Maxim this past month. Been meaning to post the article here but the scanner is on the fritz at home and I keep forgetting the magazine at home when I come to work.

Polk has really come into making some great speakers IMO when they changed ???? a few years back. Rotel is also impressive stuff as mentioned.

Just thought I'd throw these out there as an interesting option....but I don't know how you'll audition them. I've read some good things about them, but have no personal experience.

You'll probably get 25 replies with 25 different opinions that all say "These are the best!" The idea is...get what sounds good to you.

Go to a place and listen, find out what you like then go look for a deal. They are out there.

EDIT*** FWIW, I have Genesis APM 1's.

    Blose? Guilty.

    Nice one's Darth.

Yep - Listen to anything before buying. Find a nice audio store with a listening room and make an appointment.

I have to second that advice. It took me a week to finally decide on my subwoofer. Many visits listening to various sound clips on my top three picks, the staff did put up with me and I appreciated their patience, when I decided, I whipped out the card and they got their commission.
