I am looking for a my first Ferrari and as a family guy prefer a 456. Are there some maintenance issues specific to that model that I should know [cooling, transmission - I prefer the 6 speed-, belts, hoses]? Shouid I reject looking at any car that is missing the service records or that did not have all service performed by a dealer? How could I get a reliable prepurchase inspection for a car several hundred miles from home? Where is a good place to start to find one?
    Thanks.

I can't help you with a 456 but I can be helpful if you're interested
in a 456M. I am the original owner of my Ferrari and have had no
problems during the first 8,200 miles, except for the original battery
that was replaced under warranty. (Tomorrow I am replacing the
    original tires.)

I would hope your prospective 456M has all the service records,
    books, etc.

I have met Augie Borges of Ferrari of Washington (I am in
    N. VA. often for business). Give him a call when you're ready
    to begin.

    Regards,

    Neal.

Sure, Neal, 456M. Yes, tell me about it.
    Is yours for sale?
On the Fwash website, they don't have this model in their "preowned". Thanks.

Neal, first let me congratulate you on the spelling of your first name.
What are the odds of a pair of "Neals" discussing the merits of
    the 456M in this chatroom?

I bought my Ferrari new from Cauley Ferrari of W. Bloomfield,
MI. (near Detroit). The salesman is Dan Kizner, who knows
his Ferraris and is a very good guy to work with. They currently
have a 456M (2001) for sale and their web site is www.cauleyferrari.com.

(Dan is trying to interest me in ordering a new 612 Scaglietti.
    Right now, I don' know.)

At the 2002 Paris Auto Show the Ferrari stand featured a bi-color
456M GT. I ordered mine soon thereafter to look exactly like
the one featured at the show. Without appearing too immodest
I have to say my 456M is gorgeous.

If I ordered a new Ferrari I would sell the 456M. Right now,
though, I am not eager to do this. (I also have a 2006 Jaguar XKR,
which is fantastic, but my wife wants me to sell either the 456M
or XKR, thinking that two high performance sports cars in one
family is one too many.) So I guess one of these cars is
    "on the block".

    Dan Kizner is at 248-538-9600.

    Stay in touch,

    Neal.

    Brian -

    Don't worry! I haven't gone off the proverbial "deep-end".
The 456M GT stays for more reasons than I have time to
type here. Only way it goes if I replace it with a 612 Scaglietti.

I know the 612 is technically superior and faster but it kind of leaves me cold in the styling area. I think the 456 design is a classic and its plenty fast for what it is.

    I totally agree with you.
In fact, I have always looked at the photos of
the 612 and wondered about its styling.
However, I have never seen one in person and
rely on the viewpoints of others who have been
    up close to the 612.

    Neal,
The 612 is so bland(for a Ferrari) in my opinion that last yr at Monterey I walked right past it without recognizing it was "the" new model.
They are not exactly jumping out of the showrooms so if you go for it you should be able to get a big time discount off MSRP-also be prepared for the painful depreciation that the modern 12 cylinders have suffered.

I bought a 95 456 GT this summer. I had the PPI done along with the engine compression. Be wary of who does the PPI. The person who did my PPI came highly recommened, but I was dissapointed in the thoroughness of the PPI upon delivery of the car (car from CA, shipped to SC). It took some time and money to get things sorted out.

This was my first 12 cylinder, and I love ithe power and torque so much I have been considering a jump into the 550 for more performance.

If you have any specific questions about the non-M version, you can pm me.

There are a decent amount of 456s out there, and you definitely want to get an prepurchase inspection. I either hire certified factory mechanics to do the inspection, or a third-party inspection company (not as effective when buying a Ferrari.). If you end up buying private party, spend the extra few hundred to have a local dealer check it out.
