    I have a '79 sunroof car - will probably be on the market later this year after I change belts/tensioner bearings.

    FYI - the rolling 30-year SMOG exemption was stopped in 2005, so now all cars 1976 and newer require the bi-annual SMOG in most counties. 1975 and older do not.

    Does anyone know what would be involved importing a 75 Canadian car into California USA? I wonder what DOT would say? Would it need a one time smog test?

    You might want to consider a '77 or older --- better/hotter cam profile, no cat, and thus quicker/faster/zippier!!

    Smog exemption only goes to 75... not 78. anything 76 and newer needs to be smogged.

    http://dmv.ca.gov/vr/smogfaq.htm#BM2536

    Smog inspections are required unless your vehicle is:

    * Hybrid
    * 1975 year model or older
    * Diesel powered
    * Electric
    * Natural gas powered and has a Gross Vehicle Weight rating of 14,001 lbs. or more.
    * Motorcycle
    * Trailer

    Shops tell me that it's difficult to pass smog without the cats, so it's a cost control issue every other year
    if I have a 75 and I have to pay 3-5k to a shop to squeeze it through then I'd rather keep it towards 78 and up

    I believe it has been noted that a '75 or older is exempt from the smog test (In which case, you'd be better off without the air pumps and such). Fortunately, that isn't an issue here in Florida.

    I went up and looked at it, it has rust, it's missing all the emissions equip. it's missing a bunch of h/w, elect probs, windows don't work, needs a suspension rebuild etc. But it did run well but since its missing all the smog gear it would run well.

    Chuck, if what the group is saying is that a '75 is exempt from smog testing....wouldn't that be the holy grail for you CA guys? You wouldnt care about smog pumps or anything.

    The question I have is: Is that true for only existing in-state CALI cars? or can you 'import' one from another state, smog exempt?

    I prefer Series II looks, but if you can be exempted....Go Series I

    Any 75 or earlier car should be exempt from smog. My last fun car was built in 1970 and imported from Italy to Florida in 2005 where it received a Florida title, then shipped to me in So.California where the ID plate and FL title was inspected at the DMV. It was then issued a 2005 California title. It did not have to go through smog even once.

    Cheers,
    Paul

    it is the exact opposite you will have a hard time smoging any post 75 car. 75 and earlier no smog!!!

    yes, no 76's and 77's
    it's a balance, the improvements they made for a general car were better in series II where the power's better in the series I
    78's are kind of in the middle where 79's and 80 the HP dropped and it got heavier
    agree general looks are better in series II, didn't like the bumper thing in 76, 77

    I asked some shops in San Fran about that and I got the long version of how hard they are to smog until 78 when they came with cats. Like the series II looks better but series I is faster

    I'll poke around and check out some 75's thanks

    It's in Toronto Canada but was originally from Arizona. It's an early 75 so it has the hotter cams and Euro air box. It had a complete engine and suspension rebuild and is only driven in summer. There are a few outstanding things to do (mostly cosmetic). It is due for a belt service next year. Valve adjustment was done last summer. My bumpers have also been pushed in so they are not as offensive. See the thread on my rebuild in the previous post for more info. Smog equipment was removed by previous owner as it no longer required an emission test here.
