A friend of mine has the rare chance to participate in the Mongolian rally. It is a 10k mile rally from the UK to Mongolia in June of 2011. My friend is a doctor and could probably take care of all the medical issues, but he is not much of a mechanic. So if there are any mechanics out there with some vacation time on their hand and willing to join in an adventure of a lifetime, send me a PM and I'll get you in contact. My friend is based in Chicago.

Anybody interested, please respond quickly as he has only this week left to make the downpayment for the participation.

Try posting on SpecialStage.com forums. Its where all the rally gearheads hang out.

Well, according to to website I think I qualify.
"While mechanical knowledge can be useful, just think of all the extra fun you'll have by not knowing which end of a spanner to hold and getting into some frantic hand waving explaining that your car is broken to a passing Kazakh. The more that goes wrong the better - many of the best stories come from those that didn't quite make it."
Sounds like a true adventure and a lot of fun.

Can I go just for the ride?

Hell I'll even bring along a basket full of goodies so we can eat on the way to victory, one hand on the wheel the other holding a sandwich :D

I dunno. Spending weeks in a cramped car under stressful conditions w/ someone you've never met seems a recipe for disaster. Unless they were a nymphomaniac supermodel I suppose.

    I agree.

A relative of mine has actually done Beijing to Paris and published a book about it. Reading that was reason enough for me to run the other direction. Even the best of friends got to the point of killing each other in these conditions.

BTW: Thanks for your advice about the rally forum. I passed it on to my friend.

Even a nymphomaniac supermodel starts to smell pretty nasty after 2-3 days in a car...
Disclaimer: did 2 seasons (79,80) as navigator for team Opel.

I could be interested if I can get my social security paid up by than for the year. Supposed to be retiring next year. If I have to put up with him driving all the time, I am probably not interested. What is he using for a car?

Oh by the way, these are some of the tools we had with us when we drove to Monterey and back in 2004. Jim was using some of them on his '53 Vignale Spyder that day at my friend's place in Nevada City, CA. Didn't have room for the spare tire in the 308. What a great trip...

You'd be a good fit. I sent you guys an email. My friend is currently somewhere in Africa. Dunno whether the sign up deadline has past though.

If you guys end up doing this I'll buy you dinner in London! :)

I'm proud to announce that "Team Windy City" with Norbert and Bob will be at the start of the 2011 London-Mongolia rally!

Congrats guys and do your homework selecting and beefing up your car: Not older than 10 years, 1.2 litre engine. Not many choices (Suzuki Swift?), but whatever it is, I recommend Norbert better completely disassembles and reassembles it in his garage to get to know it inside out.

From what I hear, sponsors are welcome. ;)
