I have the comcast dvrs and they are the worst piece of sht you can imagine. I pay $200 per month and hate these dvrs to the core. I went to look at TIVo and found that to use a TIVO box, I have to pay comcast a 3$ per month fee per box for the cable card (no big deal) AND I have to pay TIVO a $13 fee per month PER BOX!!! That seems ridiculous to me. A VCR with 2 monthly subscriptions...WTF? People actuallly accept that? Anyway, is there another option that doesn't have a monthly fee? I know I'll still have to pay comcast the monthly fee for the card, but there has to be a dvr out there without a monthly fee associated with the machine.

Build or re-purpose a PC to do the job. There are several different flavors of open source software to make your own DVR. Keeping listings up-to-date may be a bit challenging and may require subscribing to a service but, other than that, it's easy.
I've used gb-pvr and another popular one is MythTV but you can google for others.

Tivo use to offer a product called Tivo basic which had no monthly fees. Catch was you couldn't do season pass or record anything beyond 3 days. They're typically part of a DVD player and you can find them on eBay now and then. I have a Toshiba one that works but it only runs on analog cable...

I use windows Media Center with a cable box... records GREAT. Downside? The only
option is that annoying wmv-ms format - can only be viewed on the computer that
recorded the show... unless someone knows a workaround...

I have a Panasonic dvd recorder with built in DVR. It has a hard drive for recording and then you can burn the shows off to dvd.
