Figured I'd start here first, then move onto the salvage yards. Obviously, it can be pretty hammered and a V-12 is aesthetically preferable. I'm moving into a new office, have space to fill and figured this would be a cool project. Thanks.

I have a Maserati V8 if youre interested. You might be able to change the valve covers over to Ferrari covers and no one would know the difference.

PM me if you are at all interested.

    I like it !

Perhaps you could use a flathead ford,
and make up some red valve covers
that look like double overhead cams.

Maybe an old Chevy truck V-12, painted red....

Got a 355 out of a burnt car. Need a bit of cleaning. The heads are off the block. Exactly how much of it do you need and will you need the internals also?
    Let me know

The 355 and Maserati are both options. Any chance both of you can post up a picture or PM me one? I used to own a Maserati CC, so that would be cool.

I shouldn't need any of the internals, but I guess I haven't figured out how much of the engine I should retain for the best look. I've seen pictures of them stripped and others with a more finished look and like them both. I figure whatever I use can be pretty hammered, as most of the finish could be fixed with sandblast and powdercoat.

Pretty safe to say that I have no idea what I'm doing, but will give it a try anyways.

One of my plans in the near future is to take a V12 block, convert all the oil bearings and piston rings to roller bearings, then attach a small silent electric motor to the crankshaft. Then the engine can be "running" and you can watch the pistons move through the glass top.

Great idea. I had a clear plastic model engine that did such just like the one in this you tube video when I was a kid.

I just had that thought before I scrolled down and saw your post. Another great idea would be to have the outsides of the cylinder walls opened up so the internal rotation could be viewed aswell, just a thought.

Hi macadoo, I have a friend who has a V-12 engine block from a Ferrari 365 GTC/4 that through a connecting rod. If you're interested let me know and I will give you his email address.

If you are thinking about a v12, a more cost effective method might be to use an old Jag V12. You can usually find neglected XJS' for a couple grand on craigslist, and that is for the whole car!
