I have been shooting with a Nikon D70 for years and then started using a friend's D40 every so often - which I was really impressed with (Audi and flower picture below.)

But I think it is time to upgrade! I have used a Nikon D7000 with a 17-55 f2.8 and loved it, but it is kinda pricy (B&W shot of a friend below - which I can't attach standing the correct way.) I mainly shoot motorsports pictures, random pictures of friends and still life. This camera will be completely for fun - it is a stupid complex I have but I hate it when people tell me to take a picture! If you want the shot - you take it! I also don't really use photoshop - I know how - but I am just lazy when it comes to editing.

I am pretty much sold on the camera but I am open to suggestions on the lens. How are the Tamrons and Sigma's these days?

Ive had my D7000 for just over a year and love it. I also have a Tamron 17-50 f:2.8, which is a real nice lens that's way less expensive than the Nikkor 17-55. Mine is an older one, but the latest ones have vibration control and cost less than 500 bucks. I would say that with one of those lenses and the D7000, you'd be in good shape. As you know from using the Nikkor, that's a very convenient and useful zoom range.

This photo was taken with the Tamron lens on my old D80.

D7000 is arguably the best non-professional camera on the market. Top tier for image quality overall, has outstanding dynamic range, reasonable high-sensitivity, great autofocus system, etc.

Thanks guys - I went ahead and pulled the trigger and bought the body only! I am going to hold off on a lens right now - just using my 18-70 from my D70 kit.

I will be trying it out later today - so happy that I bought it!
