Hello and thanks in advance, I've posted a few times on my purchase of a 1988 Testarossa. It was in need of a lot of little maintenance items when I bought it as well as a major service. It ran, but not great because it spent so much time in storage. Moreover, the tires were so old and flat it rode poorly so driving it was a bit of a risk. I've gone though it electrically and mechanically in an effort to make everything stock and proper as possible doing a full engine out service, where I've checked valve clearances and cam timing which are all spot on. I've measured the ignition wires for resistance and replaced all extenders. I've got a good spark at all cylinders. I've been enjoying it for about a week or so but have no reference point to know if my experience is right or I've missed something. I'm the type of person who can overthink things and get lost in data. Moreover, modern cars have erased my memory for what '80s fuel injection was like. Here are a list of questions that I feel any long term owner of a Testarossa might be able to answer: 1. The car fires up between one and two seconds of cranking but seems to hunt for an idle a bit. It's around 1200-1300 RPM's and it takes a minute to settle to a smooth idle at about 1200 + RPM's. Is this normal? Modern fuel injection has set the bar so high, so maybe I'm over thinking things? It will also take a long time to settle at the 1000RPM idle as it takes a long time to warm up. Is this normal? 2. First gear takes a a bit of force to get into gear, more than the others. This doesn't change when warm. It just takes more force. Rev matching when down shifting makes it easier to shift and all other shifting seems normal. Is my experience with first gear normal? 3. I set the idle mixture settings for both banks using an innovate LM2 with dual 02 sensors placed just before the Cats. What I discovered is that the Air to Fuel ratio at idle moves all over the place till the car is fully warmed up. It needs 30 min of idling or use to get everything hot and to a point where the readings get predictable. If I set them earlier in the heat up cycle, then the car leans itself out as it warms up and wants to stall. So I set the idle mixture to 14.5:1 AFR for both banks. I set the RPM's to 1k when fully warm. This seemed to be a good spot measuring much richer and higher RPM at cold start but leans out. What's odd is even at this setting the AFR will seem to float at times as the fuel injection system is making changes. It will go lean and then return a few seconds later. This sequence happens about every min. Any insight here would be appreciated. 4. Driving the car. The engine pulls smooth, accelerates well and if I didn't have the Innovate LM2 measuring my AFR as I drove I'd be none the wiser to think everything is ok. However, the fuel injection has the engine running with an Air Fuel Ration of 15:1 to 16:1 most of the time cruising down the road. If I get on it, it will drop to 14:1 or 13:1 for a brief period, but overall I'm in the 15 to 16 range. Is this normal for the KE jetronic? Is this how Ferrari met emissions? Once again, I have no point of reference so I'm looking for advice. Thanks so much Cheers!
you have a KE jetronic in your 88? 1. this is normal, also depends on the outside temperature 2. no, not normal. needs adjustment 3. it makes no sense to idel the engine 30 minutes. as soon as you start the engine you may drive it. and when really warm then you may idle the engine and adjust. but disconnect the O2 sensors when adjusting, otherwise it is always changing and you will have problems to adjust. you may also look for wrong air 4. when you not go "full power" you not need a rich mixture and so the system goes to lean. only when you go full power the system has to go to the rich mixture
