I was told you can't get a title for a car that has never had one. I dunno, maybe Alabama?

 

I owned a 1997 factory built 355 challenge for 10 years. It was imported as race car and sold by Ferrari on a bill of sale.
All I had to do for Montana DMV to issue a title was to have an insurance bond from my insurance co. to bond around any possible claims to the title for three years.
Then I sent back the bonded title 3 years later and they issued a standard title.
They only draw back I had was the bond cost me a 1000.00 and that was 20 years ago.

 

Very cool. I knew Montana was good for something other than growing dental floss!

 

1995 355 Challenge can be street legal. Pre-OBD2.

 

I don't think the OBD system is the issue. After 348, Challenge cars did not come with a title. I could be wrong.

 

Some 1995 355 Challenge cars did.

 

The ‘95 and ‘96 cars were converted street cars. If you wanted to convert your car you would the buy the conversion kit which included all the goodies to make it a challenge car. The ‘97 and ‘98 cars were factory assembled and came with a bill of sale but still North American serial no. In 1998 Ferrari issued an update kit that added the rear wing and a few other items.

 

Buy one from Japan? There are a lot road registered and when exported there is no title. Just a deregistration export document.

 

The main issue with road registering a Challenge car started with OBD II. OBD II became mandatory nationwide in all cars by the EPA in 1996. All F355 Challenge cars were OBD I (95-99), therefore the 1995 cars were compliant to be road registered but 96-99 were not road legal as they still were running OBD I systems...hence Ferrari stopped issuing titles. Even if you had a 1996 (or later) with a title it was still not considered road legal by the EPA/Federal Government. All 1995 F355 Challenge cars were issued titles and meet Federal requirements so they can be road registered
