First off...head protection and inexpensive do not belong in the same sentance. Think about it...you need somthing that is going to protect your skull and BRAIN. Do not go cheap on such an important peice of gear...

Profound statement! Sounds like he's never been to a kart track and seen one flip - inexpensive is definitely not what I'd would have wanted in the situation I saw. I'd definitely add a neck collar to the list of needed equipment. John's (husband) little 80 cc Honda shifter kart has been clocked at 94+ mph and inexpensive is the last thing on his head.

Buy a GOOD red color helmet and Ferrari stickers from Speed Gear and voila you have what you want! I have Ferrari stickers on my helmet and also my bicycling helmet too.

Post 2 & 3 above definitely discourage inexpensive helmets and "plenty of selection for 20 bucks" is most likely hardly in the category of approved helmets - incidently there's a new rating required for racing - one needs to check the rules and regs for the intended purpose.

Most Karting places have rating requirements anyway so you probably won't be able to use your "budget" helmet anyway. Just get a Red or white helmet and some stickers off ebay. Maybe give you an excuse to go to the track so you get your money's worth.

WhenI first started karting I spent almost as much on a helmet as I did on a kart. A Simpson RX-8, sorta like The Stig wears. Everybody said "cool helmet" but for me the cool part was the Snell sticker inside. It's not much of a brain, but it's the only one I've got!

The first day after having my $500 helmet come back from the paint shop with a $800 paint job on it I had a Kart land on my steering wheel and fairing about an inch from my helmet

Get a decent helmet FITTED by someone who uses one
nothing worse than a loose helmet that lifts up if you move your head

Try several brands on each one has it's own fit

Kart gear is worth every nickle and dime that you'll spend on it

    Buy a bonecrusher rib protector

buy HIGH top race shoes---nothing worse than getting burns on your left ankle from the brake rod - yes they get that hot

don't buy a non nomex helmet for karting - it won't fly for real cars and it's a waste of cash

don't use nice nomex gloves for karting if you come out of the kart they'll come apart

I believe they just changed the requirements for helmets. I think you need a snell 2003 or 2004 helmet, anything under 5 years is considered obsolete. If you're karting in anything above 100cc expect to buy a ribvest aswell, it will save you from getting broken bones etc. Neck collars are also a must. If you aren't a common racer then your neck muscles probably aren't up to snuff, and the hp/torque from a kart or sports car would be more then enough to give a bit of whiplash.

And IMHO what is on your hemlet matters least as you are always moving and no one can see it anyways!!!!!!!!

I too wanted something affordable and started to think to myself..."I like my head, it deserves something better than a bargan". HJC makes a pretty good motorcycle lid that is SNELL approved and costs a little over $150. You can find them at most bike shops. After I got mine I showed it to my local track owner and he said it was ok. It originaly came in white and I have since spent several times that much on paint, stickers and a mirrored visor. If you get a plain helmet you can be creative and develop your own personal design. But the strange part is that painting the helmet voids the warranty.

    Darkhourse,

If it states in his post that he's looking for a helmet for TRACK DAYS and karting it would be safe to bet that he'll Drive a REAL car at the track.

have I met you before or did I insult you once?

FYI, Snell ratings are updated every 5 years. In other words, you'll find SA95, SA2000 and now SA2005 as of last October. Though helmets may have been manufactured between those years, the ratings and stickers updates are only every five years.

That is not true for most of the major brands. In fact, the user manual that comes with Bell helmets gives you specific guidance about how to properly paint it (what paint/materials to use). The key is in the preparation -- you don't sand down past the factory clearcoat... just scuff it enough to bind with new primer.

Note that most tracks, and *all* FCA and SCCA sanctioned events will not accept a Snell "M" rated (motorcycle) helmet. There are several different SNELL ratings. For automotive, you normally must have a Snell SA such as SA2005 (SA means "special applications" and includes fire retardant liner material, which "M" ratings do not).
