    Where is a good Turkish sandwich shop in the Austin area? I couldn't find anything online; just a couple of hit or miss-type reviews and a couple of places that have closed down.

    Don't know of ANY Turkish eateries in Austin, TX... There could be one but I have never heard of one...

    Doner Kebaps. I used to eat them all the time when I was a soldier stationed in Germany. I thought of them when my mom was asking me what to try when she goes to NYC in a few days.

    Just the sandwich would be cool. If I could sit back with a beer and watch some belly dancing, well hey, that would be gravy.

    It's hard to believe there's no Turkish sandwich shop in Austin. Gee, this town has everything...or so I thought.

    Your best bet is to goto 6th Street and/or Warehouse District at night, as many vendors setup shop there. I've seen stalls offering doner'kebab/shuarma type of pita-wraps w/ (assuming) lamb & lettuce/tomato/sauce. They seemed more gyro/Greek-like than actual Turkish doner'kebabs.

    Most of the Mediterranean/Middle-Eastern cafe's/restaurants/eateries around towne' are more fusion or fancy/schmancy as opposed to street-level fast-food.

    Gyros should be plentiful in many eateries. Yes, the name is Greek, but it's the same thing.

    Wow. They were a little bit different in Germany (but run by people from their respective countries). The Doners had different bread and the sauce was different too. Oh yeah- never ask for Greek Mocha in a Turkish restaurant. They HATE that. :)

    BTW I found great Gyros at Zorba in Round Rock. The same guy owns the Tino's cafes, also great gyros.

    Just a wager here, perhaps even a wild assed guess, but I'd say the man is looking for a turkish sandwich.

    For reference:

    Gyro (Greek) -> generally sliced rotisserie pork or lamb + pita + onions + tomatoes + tzatziki

    Shawarma (Arab) -> generally sliced rotisserie lamb/goat + pita + onions + lettuce + cucumber + hummus + tahini

    Doner-kebab (Turkish) -> generally sliced rotisserie lamb or beef/veal + pita + onions + lettuce + tomatoes + tzatziki + chili-sauce

    Kebab-roll (Indo-Pak) -> generally skewered marinated beef/veal + pita + onions + lettuce + + green-peppers + mint-yogurt + chili-sauce
