I have a 1982 GTSi and there seems to be a 1" coolant fitting on the engine just to the right of the flywheel access cover and it seems to be in the head of the rear bank, it does have coolant in it, but I dont recall where it was supposed to go to,

if you have a readable diagram of the coolant hoses on that engine I'd appreciate knowing where that hose goes to. there does not seem to be a corresponding mating hose fitting anywhere that I can find

so to continue this mystery, my question is, is there a heater hose that runs from the drivers side of the engine thru the car to the front ? I find there are two 1" mystery hoses going from the driver's side of the engine to the front of the car, one is the vacuum hose for the power brake booster (verified) and the other one appears to be a heater hose, it appears to be clogged and full of rust, like all coolant hoses on this 40 year old rust bucket. this has been hard to very as a heater hose since the cooling system diagrams are not very clear.

I have worked on countless motorcycles and cars for 51 years and this poor old 308 has the worst documentation I have ever seen. I have a book case full of car service manuals and the 308 manual is the worst.

So...is there a 1": heater hose that goes from the engine all the way to the front of the car ? it appears the return for the heater is into the 2" coolant hoses in the vicinity of the battery.

Yes. It comes off the rear of the engine (left side of car), joins the brake booster vacuum line, and the two of them go behind the fuel tank to the front of the car. It goes to the a Y-tube that feeds the two heater valves. That water returns in the big coolant return pipe from the radiator, there's a nipple just aft of the radiator.

If you think the manual is the worst, wait until you have to change out those two hoses. Welcome to hell.

How do you change those out?

How do you connect NEW hose to the OLD hose?
