I'm trying to make some last minute plans for a group of 6-8 people to travel to NYC for 2-3 days - for a bachelor party for my partner. I've been to NYC more than a few times, but never as a "tourist" with adults (only with kids) - so I don't really have any idea what the "good" places are.

I'm looking for some advice on:

    1. Somewhere to stay. Something pretty cheap if possible, and something that might hold us all. I've found a few duplex/apts that will hold 6-8 - but I'm still looking.

    2. Places to go (bars/etc) - Places that are pretty casual. This is a group of jeans wearing guys. Any ideas would be welcome. We are just looking for something maybe unique and unusual... I'm not sure.

    3. Show(s) to see. Ive applied to tickets to Letterman, but I doubt I'll see any. Someone mentioned traveling to CT to see "Jerry Springer" - lol - I don't know about that. Anyone have any ideas/connections to something that us "tourists" would like and would be memorable?

Any other ideas are appreciated. Our travel dates are going to be either 10/11-10/14 or 10/4 - 10/7. Will decide in the next day or so for sure. A few of our guys are going to be on a budget, so keep that in mind.

    Thanks!

can you be more specific with where in NYC you will be? in manhattan, queens, brooklyn... renting a car? or need to get to places by mass transit?

Not renting a car. Exactly where we will be has yet to be determined - I'm open for suggestions. Budget considerations may force us over into Queens or Brooklyn for lodging - I don't know yet. Mass transit - yes.

I'm assuming even if we end up somewhere like Long Island City, we will be coming into Manhattan daily for whatever we are doing.

Again, I'm open to all suggestions. Last minute, can't be too picky. :) Thanks!

Hmmm. Well, I just got a call from the Letterman show - looks like we are on the short list to get tickets and will probably know for sure in a few days. She sounded like she wanted to say we were in but was following procedure. :)

My ticket request was for either 10/12 or 10/13, so I guess that just settled the dates of travel question...

See if the Yankees, Mets, or Giants are playing when your here or who is at the Garden.
THere's lots of bars in lower Manhattan. I'm not expert on them, sorry.
There's the statue of liberty, Circle line tour, (a run up the Hudson for the foilage is very nice)
And of course there's lots of Gentlemen's clubs.

CHeck into staying in Jersey. Rates are cheaper & there's rail & bus lines into the city that make commuting a breeze.

Brooklyn Brewery would be a great trip, easy to get to via mass transit.

You should check out the magazine Time Out. There is a New York version and a lot of it is online. It will tell you stuff that is going on that would be good for you guys.

On the left is a link about Free things that you can do that day. Today there was a Zombie Crawl. Meet at a pub, get made up like a zombie, for free, drink, go to the movie Zombie Land. Sounds fun.

Just a couple of articles that I thought would appeal to a bachelor party type of event, but as the party is for your partner, you have to decide what is appropriate. When you say partner, I think you mean business partner. I think my main point is that this magazine will be a good starting point.

This one is about 7 new beer gardens:
    http://newyork.timeout.com/articles/restaurants-bars/78974/new-beer-gardens-in-new-york-city
This one is about strip clubs in the city-a tradition of bachelor parties:
    http://newyork.timeout.com/articles/sex-dating/76062/the-best-strip-clubs-in-new-york-city
This article is about the best "happy endings" spas in the city. I think this has something to do with the 70th anniversary of the Wizard of Oz. But I could be wrong ;) This might be a way for your partner to have the whole Wizard of Oz experience in NYC without the big expense.

A young co-worker just went to the Museum of Sex. She thought it was good, but she's 22. http://www.museumofsex.com/ $3 off coupons on the web site.

Dim Sum in Chinatown is a great thing to do. If you haven't done it it is fun. You pick small dishes of food from carts that go by the table. We go to a good place:
    http://www.goldenunicornrestaurant.com/index.asp
This place is usually packed, but if you send one person a bit early(20 min), they can get on the list. It's a great idea for a brunch, and because you are sharing the small dishes, it can be fairly cheap. If you go to this place, you can then walk West on Canal Street and very soon you will be near Little Italy. Wave south and you will be looking at TriBeCa and our apartment. You could then continue west and be in SoHo and then walk a bit uptown and be in Greenwich Village. So in a walk of less than a mile, you could go through four famous areas of NYC. If you walk north up Mott Street from Canal, you will pass strange Chinese shops, selling live turtles for food etc. You can zig zag through that area and see Little Italy and then arrive in SoHo. In SoHo there is a cool store called Evolution, where they sell all kinds of strange mounted bugs and butterflies, stuffed animals. If you walk north on any of the streets from Evolution, you will see...aacck too long.

You should get TWO metrocards. These are cards that you use to get on the Subway and buses. The reason to get two is that you can only run 3-4 people through on one card at once, so half your party will be left behind unless you have a second card to get them through the turnstiles. Idea:maybe one of the more wealthy participants could be responsible for buying these, available at every subway stop from machines, and then the people who were less flush, could be traveling for free without feeling super uncomfortable about it. A subway fare is only a couple bucks, but it can add up in days of running around the city.

We just went to a dance/music club in the city, but I thought the music was terrible. So I can't recommend it. TimeOut has a link for clubs, but maybe someone else can chime in. A good New York experience, but no help regarding specifics.

There is a restaurant called Lucky Chengs, where all the staff are very attractive and scantily clad Asian transvestites. It can be fun to go and let everyone know the secret of the place except the bachelor. BUT! I have not been in a while and the current reviews of this place on the web are terrible. Don't go. Sounds really run down.

You should maybe go to a famous pub called McSorley's. It's one of the oldest in Manhattan. It's loud. You eat those little weiners and dip them in mustard. Drink beer.

Top of the Rock. The empire state building is a cool thing to do, but it sometimes can be packed to get up there. Smart NYers go to the Top of the Rock, Rockefeller Center. The view is still very cool, and you can see the empire state building.

Thanks everyone for the great info!

Well, we are ending up staying in Newark :) ... 1/4 the price and a short train ride into the city. No one in our party really care about luxurious accommodations - we'd rather save our cash for decent food and drink.

I'll check that out. Been using Google Maps to spot places and read their reviews. Re:mass transit - I'm going to input all the addresses into my phone, and Google Maps will give directions via mass transit and walking from my current GPS located spot to the address - I'll have it all loaded ahead of time and should make getting anywhere a snap. Google maps has all of the subway schedules and everything - pretty neat.

Awesome comments Pepsi10! Exactly what I was looking for. McSorleys was on my list! I should post my list here and see if you have any opinions one way or another. Thanks!

BTW - I did get a call from the Letterman show last night - they are giving our group tickets to the Tuesday taping of the show. Seems like quite a coup, as I've been reading that tickets are even harder to come by with all the controversy.

Staying in Newark....not a very good idea. Newark is a SH**HOLE of humanity, and I wouldn't stay there for free. Besides, it's not that close to the city and you still have a train ride back to Newark when you have a load on. Seriously, Newark has a very high crime rate and you are taking your chances by staying there.

I would definetly stay in Manhattan if I were you. Do your homework and you will find something decent for your money. Word to the wise.

I don't know what the finances are looking like for you guys and what kind of deal you are getting in Newark. Because we have an apartment in Manhattan, I don't know much about hotels. Yelp seems useful.

I have not stayed there, but The Jane Hotel for instance sounds really interesting. And it's $99 a night. But, you should read the reviews. There are communal bathrooms. You can get a real bed, but there are also bunk beds.
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-jane-new-york

Here's the link for the budget hotels
    http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=hotel&find_loc=Manhattan%2C+NY&ns=1#attrs=RestaurantsPriceRange2.1

On top of what Frank says, the great thing about having a base in NYC is that you guys can go home to change for the night etc. If you could swing the finances, I would really try to stay in NY. At the end of the evening, after numerous adult beverages, it would be great to be able to walk home. It sounds like if you stayed at The Jane, you would never forget it! But if you are finding places in Newark for $59 a night, that isn't going to happen in NYC.

You might want to download yelp for your phone. The thing about Manhattan is that there are so many tourists, that a restaurant doesn't have to be good to survive. So it's good to have yelp around to help decide between a couple choices.

I looked into many of the hotels like "The Jane" - even a couple with apartments that sleep 6 people.

The problem is this was such a last minute trip, there is nothing available. "The Jane" is also unavailable on those dates.

I know Newark isn't the greatest solution, but it is what it is. We are staying at a Holiday Inn, it's decent. I bought r/t airfare from Charlotte to Newark, and 3 nights "lodging" for only $305/pp, hard to complain about much. :)

Yeah, you know at midnight or late, it's only 15 minutes to get from Southern Manhattan to Newark via taxi through the Holland Tunnel. It'll be good. You guys are just going to sleep there.

You did great to get the Letterman tickets. And $305 airfare including lodging. Incredible.

I'd reccomend sitting in the balcony, if possible. It's the only place with a bathroom and many seats on the floor get blocked by the teleprompter and cameras. The teleprompter is not what you see at an Obama speach, but a big box.
When I went I made the mistake of sitting on the floor and had to watch Dave interview Christina Applegate from the monitor, quite a bummer!

Well, made it back in one piece, even with staying in Newark. :)

We had a blast. Spent way to long at McSorleys on Sunday afternoon/night, drinking ale's as fast as they could slam them on our table. We got there about 4 and by 6 we were cooked. They kept sitting groups of girls with us, that was fun. We then headed over to Otto's Shrunken Head, and most of us can't remember how we got back to the hotel.

Letterman was a blast, Tom Hanks was a "surprise guest". Was a lot of fun seeing it all put together.

Ate at 2nd Ave Deli, that was great. Also ate at Crifs Dogs and The Soup Spot - both were wonderful. We did Carmine's near Times Square one night with a group of local friends, that was good too.

We had reservations of Momo***u Ssam Bar for Monday lunch, but after the excessive McSorleys/Shrunked head the night before, we didn't quite make it. Too bad, I was excited about eating the $200 pork butt.

Nice work! Glad everyone made it back. Sounds like a great time. Ha, now us New Yorkers will have to check out some of the spots you found.
