    Hi,

I am looking to buy my first 308. I have always loved the cars but am just starting to really learn about them. I have come across a 1984 308 GTSI twin turbo. The car is close to where I live an seems to be in good shape from the pics and info the seller has given. But I cannot find much info on the twin turbo version of the 308 or what an average car such as this will go for. Can anyone help with info on this car? I am looking for specs, values, preferences/dislikes about the car. It is for sale by a dealer who knows little about the actual car. Any help would be great- Thanks

You don't say where you are which doesn't help identify the car

It could be a German conversion (Koenigg), it could be a US conversion (Norwood) or it could be one of the factory built Italian 2 litre cars - apologies to anyone I have left out or spelt wrong

If its your first f-car I would suggest steer clear - turbo technology has moved on so much and support will be effectively unobtainable

That's because there was never a factory version ( unless you want to count the 1984 288 ).
Any twin turbo 308 was put together by the owner after they brought it home. Be careful. One of those could either be a heck of a fun car or a total grenade. Nothing really in between. Call Norwood in Texas and talk to them about the car you found. They will be able to help probably better than anyone.

Emblem did some in the UK as well. There's a 328 TT at Joe Macari's at present.

There were two companies in the 80's that offered aftermarket kits. I believe they were all single turbo kits, not twin. Unless the car you are looking at is VERY expensive X00,000, you are not looking at a GTO. This car looked a lot like a 308QV but was a limited production turbo model. I would be surprised that a dealer that has a GTO on the lot does not know much about it. Be aware that if it is an aftermarket turbo from the 80's they are not usually worth more than a stock car.

If you're going to look at a modified car, you really need to find out exactly what was done and who did it. Start by asking is the seller has the reciepts, if not hopefully it was done by a shop that is still in bussiness. If you can't get the information, I think that drops the value.

A perfect original is generally the most prized, with nice QVs running something like $35k-$45k. If the TT car is in say $40k shape, it's probably worth $30k if it's undocumented, maybe $35k with documents....providing a clean PPI. If it's exactly the car you want with exactly the mods you would make, well it may be worht more to you. Generally people who like modified stuff always want something different from what anyone else does, so there is alway part of the project that needs to be re-done anytime it changes hands. Good luck

Thanks for the info guys. I thought I'd let anyone who was still interested know how the story of the "factory turbo" turned out.

The seller was certain that this was a factory turbo done by Prancing Horse. However, I was able to get the VIN from the car and track down some info on it. Turns out it was sold at Barrett Jackson a few years ago. According to the description the car was an aftermarket turbo 308. The turbos were installed in CA in 1993. I also found that their asking price is a 100% increase in over what the car sold for only a few years ago! I think I'll look for a different 308. Thanks again guys.
