    I just back from my vacation to Florida and had a great time floating around checking out the fish. I ended up buying a retail type diving mask from a local tourist trap just to have something. Can anyone recommend a decent brand to look for in a mask? It would be used strictly on vacation and for putzing around the beach. I don't need anything professional, just something of good quality that will work well and last. Being from Chicago, I know nothing about them or where to start! Thanks for any help!

    My 02c;

    You don't need anything "fancy" - Certified down to 1000ft etc etc.

    Most important is fit - Standard procedure is to put it on without the strap. Breath in thru your nose and it should "stick" to your face. [Assuming you don't have the worlds biggest mustache ;)]

    Snorkel is even easier - Get one with a little doohickey so it can be mounted on the outside of the masks strap - Tucking it thru the inside will eventually hurt yer' head / give you a headache. [Ask me how I know! :(] I always liked the "flexible" ones as they give a little more, surprisingly, flexibility on mounting & fit.

    Get a pair of flippers too and you're good to go - Until the bug bites and you want to learn to scuba anyway.

    Cheers,
    Ian
    PS - I don't believe you can buy 'em anymore - At least here in the States - DO NOT get a snorkel with a caged ping-pong ball at the top - *Dangerous* as they can stick, you panic, and bad things happen....

    Thanks for the reply/help. Is there an entry level brand you would suggest?

    US Divers. Any Academy/Sports Authority or similar sporting goods store would have one. I've had mine for for 12 years, from pool underwater hockey to 130ft rec diving. Hmm, now that I think abut it, maybe time for upgrade. :)

    I still have my ScubaPro mask, snorkel and Jet Fins I bought in 1974. Still in great shape, all I have had to do is replace the straps on the fins and the mask.
    Neil, it looks like you can get first-rate stuff for $65 total.

    Try a couple on at a shop. US divers are ok. I've got an oceanic, about $70. Biggest differmece is the rubber. It's much more comfortable. And look for a snorkel with a valve. They are nice.
