I will likely purchase a Ferrari located in Reno, NV in the next month or two, pending a PPI. I live in Jackson, MS (about 2000 miles away). I was wanting to go ahead and start researching different options for having the car transported here, and had a couple of questions.

    1) I would love to hear recommendations on particular companies that are reputable. I have heard of some of the "big guys", Horseless Carriage, etc. But there are so many transport companies out there it is hard to know which ones would be good to work with and would ensure the car's safety. Any ones in particular I should stay away from?

    2) What are some ballpark price guess-timates for transport from Reno to Jackson?

    3) Any other pearls of wisdom to know when arranging transport for your car? I have had transport companies pick up a couple of cars I have sold, but have never used one to ship a car to me, so I am a rookie at this whole game! Thanks for the help.

Horseless is great. Just make sure you document everything before and after to avoid surprises.

Also check out Exotic Car Transport. We've used it couple of times and it was worth it. Our car was perfect when it left the dealership and it arrived in perfect condition.

I used Reliable before - NEVER again. They did the transportation for the Viper event in Vegas and scratched and dinged numerous cars. Intercity is very good.

Horseless Carriage is supposed to be good, and there is a guy named Gary Almond (forget his company - maybe its that exotic transport one?) who is very good - drives your car himself personally with a dually truck and a fully enclosed trailer. Door to dor personal service.

I own an enclosed auto transport company and have heard many stories over the years from different companys, some don't have insurance or have canceled it so ask for a faxed copy, alot of transports have different drop yards (some they just rent)so make sure your car does'nt change trucks if you can,I've seen yards full of cars covered in dust, from hondas to exotics and owners who have'nt seen there car for a month or more.Even many of the big haulers do this, not to scare you, just ask.I also see alot of carriers broker cars if they are full or dont have a truck of there own going to your area, this means you or the company does'nt know who you'll be getting, good or bad, untill a driver shows up.We cover all our cars in the trailer to protec from dust and use only soft tie tire straps, not chains,I've seen many exotics chained,so ask.We always do inspections when picking up the car and have the owner sign the report and do another inspection for delivery, this should be done whoever transports you car.Make sure you have the drivers cell number(some don't want you to have it)so you know where the car is in the case the driver decides to stop at home for a few days,my wife keeps in contact with the customer the whole trip. You should expect .75 to .90 per mile depending on the carrier and 5 to 7 days from pickup to delivery

I've used Passport Transport (owned by Fed-X) without complaint.

I did some searches here, and figure the measure of a transport company is how well they "make it right" when things go wrong. On that basis, and the info on the old Fchat site, I selected Passport.

have used them twice. as with anything, keep on top of it. when they picked up my ferrari i told them dallas and they went to houston. that cost me about a week. when they delivered the car, it didn't have a cover. even though other cars were covered in platic sheet and mine had a cover in the trunk. some caulking from the ceiling dripped on the car. wiped right off. so, all in all good, but a lack of attention to the details. probably just this one move. i was satisfied in the end. i think the boss even called me to check up.

I've used them countless times moving cars from one home to the other. Always professional, never any issues. Recently had a car delivered to me from the seller on Horseless Carraige and they were terrific as well.

forgot to mention it but it's good advice.Do not let them drop your car. make sure it's door to door on the same truck.

+1 for Exotic Car Transport, all around great experience. Not sure if that route works well for them though.

You can get a great deal from an independent carrier if you are very careful. I needed a car transported 3000 miles from the west coast. I called three or four well known Ferrari brokers and one name kept coming up. I called the guy and it turned out that he and his wife lived in the transporter and just moved cars constantly. They brought my car up here for $600.00.

My car was delivered this month using Fed-Ex Passport. I would probably use them again BUT:

Even though my Ferrari was on top, it was dirty when it was delivered...it was detailed right before it was shipped.

The car was a day late because the driver thought I was in Northern California...he drove within 2 hours from my house on his way up to Northern California.

The driver also started the car and didn't let it warm up before backing it out of the transport.

I bad mouth Exotic every chance I get. They stranded me once and never even bothered to call to say they would be days late for a pick-up. That cost me over $1,000 in plane fares. They never offered to give me any relief, offer a free or discounted trip in the future, or even apologize. I recommend that no one EVER use Exotic. They will leave you high and dry and not give a damn.

Exotic is unreliable and hasn't heard of the term "customer service". By the way, no matter whom you use, make sure all tool kits, manuals, etc. are removed and shipped separately. The drivers know what these items are worth, if you get my drift....

Ferrari uses Horseless Carriage. They picked up my car for the 275 tour and took it to New Jersey with no problem s(of course I was not there to see the results)
On the return trip they caused damage to my car and tricked my mechanic into signing the reciept that said "not responsible for damage"
I fought with them and they were very dishonorable about it. Ferrari ended up paying to fix the damage to my car. I would definately not use Horseless Carriage again.

Gary Almond has given me excellent service. At the time I used him he was independent and not associated in any way with Exotic.

When things go well with an auto transporter, you can't really be sure whether they're good, or whether you got lucky.

The real test is how they respond when things don't all go as planned.

Do they duck responsibility, or do they try to make it right?

Maybe we need a thread on those situations -- when auto transport goes wrong.
