Car looks great, tan top is nice, 1989 is a great year.

Advice: Keep your distance from the dealer though. Search on Schmitt.

Make sure the rear windows work well - I had to have mine replaced and it was a pain and expensive.

Tan top looks awful, IMO. Boot doesn't fit because the knuckleheads don't know how to properly lower the top. Service history? Definitely look/drive/inspect before you buy.

Hershey, did you have a look at the '89 that is at Cardiff in SD? If yes, what did you think? I thought it was a very nice car. They're probably pretty soft on the price now too - they've had it a while!

    hershey,

This car is likely to be set at a higher price by the seller for the low miles, even though you've come to understand that very low miles actually add more risk. However, if everything checks out with a thorough PPI. should be a nice car. I believe this car was listed last month on ebay and didn't get above the seller's reserve. Just make sure the PPI is thorough (in addition to the normal checks):

    1. Observe how the top is put up, latched and all the windows powered to the up position. The motors are slow, but they should all work...this would be an expensive repair ($1,500) if not in good shape.
    2. Take the fuse panel cover off and un-unsnap the white connector bus at the right side of the panel (push in on both sides to disconnect) check that there are no burn marks--- fuel pump pin at #3 and 4 from the bottom).
    3. The tires are likely to be too old to be safe (bargain that into the final price).
    4. You should get the leather booth cover ($1000) and the black tonneau cover ($600) with it. Check the condition of the leather straps.
    5. for the high price, this car should have all the owner's manual books ($100) and the leather owner's manual cover ($350 to replace).
    6. Both tool kits.

It's tough to stay neutral and not get over-excited when you finally see one in good external shape, but being methodical and detailed in the beginning will save you heartache. If you can get a 10% holdback until it passes CA smog, that would be super for you.

Don't know where you are looking but a reproduction boot cover is nearly $2k from re-originals, and over $3k from Ferrari.

Often times it's not the motors that fail, but the switches. It might come across that the motors are bad, but the switches fail too.

Looks like a nice car, however, take a peek at the top as I believe the owner doesn't know how to fold the top properly (see ebay pic). I inquired with him via email about three weeks ago and mentioned the top didn't look like it was folding correctly and he seemed clueless... A broken top can be expensive to fix. Good luck!

It seems to run and drive well and looks like new inside and out. I also looked at and bought a 86 with 39K miles from Mike Cannillo who is also on long island. I was concerned with too few miles, and spending every month for something else that had dried out from non-use and preferred the older car that had been driven and had service records back to day one, along with a more recent servicing. Having said that if the 86 did not pass its PPI, I would have tried to make a deal on the 88.

I found the seller was very willing to provide info via email, and once he knew I was serious via phone.

Good luck in your search, It will work out, it just takes time.

FYI - when I was looking there seemed to be a number of Southern California Mondials, Red/tan on collectorcars.com
