I am looking for a new formal watch as I have not purchased one in many years. Open to all suggestions. Looking around the 5-20k region

I am not a formal watch guy however in a formal you cant go wrong with anything from the big three; PP, VC, and AP.
A used Calatrava PP puts you "in the club" but in the low rent district.
Of these three VC gives the most impact for the $.

I'm really liking the formal Breguets but the new ones are "Swatchs" if that makes a difference. For the $ they have the best look IMO.
Glashutte Original is another great watch.

    Or....
    ;)

Jaquet Droz-nice quality movements, great design and fantastic dials, you don't see them on everyones wrists.

I have been swayed towards AP's in the past especially the royal oaks. I good friend of mine actually owns an Offshore, and I think they are a fantastic looking watch but not quite sure yet if I want to spend that sort of money.
Another watch I've also had my eye on is a gold classic fusion. I am interested to see if anyone here has one and what they are like on a day to day basis?

I had a gold Royal Oak on a strap (not the offshore) for a long time and wore it quite a bit. It's a very good choice. Not as expensive as the offshore yet still sporty and easily goes under a shirt cuff if you choose to wear it with a suit. The AP Millenary is a dressier option in their line.

Better than a Rolex too. ;):)

The IWC Ingenere or Portugiser is another good one. Breguet, some (not all) Breitlings will work. For less dough you can also get away with a Speedmaster as a crossover.
