Gang, This is an inquiry for a friend (private party). Not a dealer or broker. Ideally, he's looking for a late model 550, TdF Blue but would also consider '97-99 and the other dark blues (Pozzi, Swaters, Sebring etc) Tan interior or Cuoio quilted 250 shelf, preferably. stock exhaust is fine, but Tubi is a plus (natch) unmolested is preferable, and no crazy color combos (blue dash/steering wheels/etc) stock wheels are fine services and good history important all the usual TSB stuff performed and updated services appropriate for mileage mileage under 25k...or must be an incredible deal He's looking for a nice 550 to drive, not concours queen, so a few blemishes ok. Anything look good that's not already well advertised (eBay Motors, Cars.com) please pass it along. Thanks all... ketel
Have you seen the one at FSV? Cosmetically, it's near perfect. I understand that it's a consignment and it's been there for quite a while.
Thanks, David. Yes, I know of the car. It's nice but once you see the interior you learn pretty quickly why it's been sitting for a long time - it's all blue with yellow or tan piping (can't really tell). The TdF Blue/Blue is not a good look, IMHO. There are a couple floating around, also with no takers. Some F-chatters are calling it the smurf 550. I appreciate the thought anyway. I should also revise my earlier post that started this thread by saying that many of those search parameters are open to negotiation. In other words, although my friend's spec is pretty set on TdF Blue/Tan or Cuoio, if a Pozzi Blue/Sabbia surfaces (or something similarly close enough) I'd love to hear about it. ketel
I assume you also have seen the 1998 TDF/tan 550 that has been for sale for a while on Mike Sheehan's website: http://www.ferraris-online.com/pages/carintro.php?reqcardir=FE-550M-111317 Car has just over 37,000 miles. Over your 25k mile limit, but I thought I would mention it just in case you haven't seen it. Also it has the carpeted rear shelf, not the 250 Lusso style leather. Asking price is only $89,500. Detailed history of the car was the subject of a magazine article in SCM back in December 2006: http://www.ferraris-online.com/pages/article.php?reqart=SCM_200612_SS . Image Unavailable, Please Login
Your might try autotrader.com. There is a nice one in North Carolina that I haggled over two Fridays ago, but I thought the price was unrealistic. I could not get the price down enough and went for a Grey one instead from Scottsdale. The search was still fun and these owners and brokers that are asking garage queen prices for drivers will have to come to their senses eventually. It took me two months to comb over the many that are out there and find a motivated seller. If you can wait till the Christmas Season it will be much better for your bottom line. Happy hunting, Oceans
you buy the car the recently had on ebay a couple of times? No Sir, not that I am aware of. The Gentleman that sold it to Scottsdale apparently traded it in on a new V8 Vantage convertible. To Scottsdale it was just another car in their inventory, not some guy's pride and joy like those cars at the brokers that I have been trying to finnegle a deal with. Had to get the doctors that owned them off the golf course to ok the deal, but apparently, interrupting their game each time did not make them willing to deal. It's got 7k miles and has been well cared for. I'm stoked! Oceans
Have you checked FerrariAds...? Bruce Wellington is selling his 550 (click here) - 120674, Euro car, Amerispec conversion, built July, 2000, Blu Tour de France with tan leather, blue carpets, power Daytona seats, blue piping, blue carpeted rear shelf, Tubi exhaust, modular wheels, aluminum calipers, 12,600+ miles.
Thanks, Stan. He's pretty stuck on a 550 because he (like me) doesn't like F1 paddles and it's hard to find a 6-speed 575 with the required FHP or GTC pack in TdF Blue/Tan that's not going to be almost double the price of a comparable 550. But if you hear of one, let me know!! ketel
Ouch...That's not good, Darth...I take it you have driven this 550?....Anything else to know about this one? thnx, ketel
Well, when I drove it a few years ago, it was a nice car. Since then I cannot say but I highly doubt Bruce would abuse it at all.
I think Dave was joking - but you'd have to double check with him. Any time I drove it - or rode in it - nothing ever rattled. But Dave's got the skills to see one 180, so he would know.
Thanks, toggie. Already know about Sheehan's TdF 550 [At this point, who doesn't ] Rumor has it that it's tired....or maybe that's just coming from people that aren't fans of Mr. Sheehan...(seems like a big club.)...either way, passed on considering that for now... ketel
1999 550, tdf/tan. Rear shelf is carpeted. Black brake calipers. No fender shields. Pictures show it has tools and books with it. Being sold by Black Horse Automotive in Bridgeport, CT. 11,586 miles on it. Asking $119k. Looks clean. Don't know anything about the car. The usual recommendation on doing a PPI. Picture of receipt showing a 15k belt service on 6/23/2006. Car had 7650 miles on it then. Appears to have been owned by someone in NJ at the time. IMHO, this is almost the perfect number of miles to find on a service document. This car has averaged 2k miles a year for the past 2 years. So, it likely has not been sitting in storage going sour nor overly used recently either. Encouraging, but the PPI is still critical to do, in my mind. http://www.blackhorsegarage.com/cars-for-sale/1999-ferrari-550-maranello/ The one thing I've learned to ask about a 550 or 575 for sale is if there is any shrinkage or pulling of the dash leather. Seems to happen around the front edge by the windshield and around that separate piece of leather covering the tach/speedo instrument cluster. I think it is exposure to the direct sunlight that does it (and not using a leather treatment on a periodic basis). Can't tell on this car's pics if there is any issue or not in that area. Also, the driver's side seat bolster is not visible in the interior pics - often the bolster is worn some on these cars. Also, often the driver's seat will have fingernail/ring/watch scratches on the side of it from setting the hand brake. As the prices keep coming down, I'm thinking a 550 is one of the best cars to buy as a second Ferrari. I'm jealous of the V12's massive torque (and the space in that trunk for a small set of golf clubs or luggage for an overnight trip). Good luck on your search. Thanks again, Toggie. Yes, we've been pinging back and forth with the BlackHorse guys on this 550. Pretty nice, although no quilted shelf, but perhaps you can't have everything. A little strong on price, if you want my honest opinion, but I guess you can ask for whatever you want. I also appreciate your run-down on what to look for (seat bolsters, shrinkage, etc) in addition to all the usual stuff 550 buyers should inspect prior to springing for a PPI -- TSB upgrades, motor mounts, etc. Another item I'd add to that would be peeling on the metal surrounding the weatherstripping. I've noticed that on a couple 550s now with modest mileage. Hey, does anyone know anything about the 2001 TdF 550 @ Don L Leasing in FL? They've had it for about 9 months. They are still asking yesterday's money which might explain why it's been sitting. ($125k)...Looks great in pics, so would be curious to know if anyone did any due diligence on this car. I've heard mixed thing about Don L vehicles. but I have only had a pretty good experience with them, with the exception that their lease rates are pretty expensive. A second Ferrari? I would consider the 550 the flagship, personally. What are you considering the 550 second fiddle to in a Ferrari garage? Just curious. ketel
I was high bidder on that car twice. I emailed the seller way back, got half the info asked for, but the car does look extremely nice. Just sorta fell out of love (or lost the will to make them realize their reserve was $30grand high) before I went to the PPi stage.
I have a 2006 black/tan F430 F1 that I like quite a bit. Not so much second fiddle but a second one for me to buy. IMHO, the 430 is a little more nimble around the corners than the 550 but the 550 has a lot more torque.
