I'm working right now on getting all of the heat shields to fit right on the 1971 Euro 246GT. Everything is fitting well but I need some clarification on how the heat shield that goes over the right side CV joint should be fitted. If anyone has any photos of this assembly please post them here.

I need to get the placement as correct as possible so any image would be good. Below is the original parts book that shows the part I am after and it should be easily photographed by shooting down into the engine compartment.

It's fitted on my car but very difficult to see from the top. I will take a couple of photos and see whether they come out.

Same here, the header tank stops me from taking a good photo. Have you tried searching for threads on engine rebuilds, must be one in there somewhere. Surely omgjon can help out with a photo,!

I have dug and dug and not found anything yet. OMGJON's cars are US cars so the shielding on the headers would obstruct the view considerably. Again any help from the community would be most appreciated.

Rob, you probably already know this, but this part is available from Superformance. My 71 Euro was missing this part, but the Superformance part seemed to fit the bill.

Ian thank you for the photos. The interesting thing is that the parts book shows the shield as having a bracket on it while your image shows straps around the exhaust that hold the shield in place. These straps are not inventoried as items in the parts book but regardless I have seen enough original headers (including my own) that have the straps to have me think that this is totally original.

I am using new NOS Ansa headers and have found most of the mounting brackets to be off anyways so I am re-fitting all of the mounts. It appears as though regarding the exhaust system, there are a lot a variations even within the same model so there is no one correct way to fit the heat shields.

Ron thanks for the reminder on the Superformance part. I have that one and an original one to sample off of and can tell you that the Superformance shield is of excellent construction and a dead on match to original.

    Rob,

Those are the original fixings mounted onto a replica Superformance heat shield. In my experience the parts book is an unfinished work as it rarely details any fixings on the car and fails to identify screw types/sizes, type of washers, hose diameters, rubber seal profiles etc. It also fails to show things like the small brackets that the wheel arch liners are fixed onto. As the factory either upgraded or altered certain methods of fixing items in place during production these changes were not carried through to revisions in the parts book. Some may be included in technical bulletins but those are not readily available.

As I understand it this practice still continues to this day on the modern cars with workshop tech's "discovering" alterations on cars as new examples go through PDI checks or come in for service.

On a somewhat related topic, there seems to be difference of opinion on whether this and the other heat shields are supposed to be painted black or left bare metal. The Superformance part comes bare metal, but someone who restored a Dino claims they should be black.

Sorry but i just cannot get a good shot of the HS.

However i can confirm that they have brackets welded onto the headers and not as Iain's mountings. The HS is bolted onto to these with short M10 bolts. The HS is ally and unpainted.

Thank you all for your replies. My research seems to indicate that there are 3 mounting methods that vary even within the same vintage of Dino:

    1. Two metal straps that go around the exhaust header tube. These straps have a stud on them that the shield is mounted to.

    2. Two tabs on the exhaust where the shield bolts through the shield to the tabs like Racerboy posted.

    3. A shield with brackets rivited to it which bolt to brackets that are welded to the header which I have seen and is like the drawing in the parts book.

I believe it is fair to say that any one of these three mounting methods is correct as there is no clear information otherwise. What is for sure is that the car should have a shield that protects the right side CV from the radiant heat of the manifold.
