    Well, Kalifornia has done it.
They have tightened emissions again and now my Hyperflows can't pass any more.

Worked fine for six years. Now I must use the stock cats to pass.

Well, since I already have to put on stock cats every four years, now I might as well run test pipes.

    Any used ones for sale?

It's amazing that test pipes for integras, Mazda and nissans run about $80 a pair but somehow the Ferrari tax jacks up the price to anywhere from $500-1000.

    Yeah right.

Ok, so anybody have some test pipes for a 348 lying around?

    :)

    Kai

    Kaivball,

Are you sure it's not just the cats just not working all that well. What are your limits out there? I run high flow cats from Nouvalari (here in the UK rather than the importer out there) and they are seriously high flow, huge difference from stock, cost me about £400 I think and these are the results at my last 'smog test' (part of what we call the MOT).

Can you post your smog results?

My car is with my mechanic and he has the paperwork.
I will stop by this week and get the failed numbers and post them.

Kai, that seems a tad harsh. When they change the emissions do they back date it? Ie, do the new numbers count for all old vehicles? Seems a bit off side really. I mean, what happens if your car wasn't that clean right out of the factory 20 odd years ago?

Smog standards vary from state to state, let alone U.K to U.S.

Got it. The pic I posted shows our max next to what I got with my high flows on. Guessing it's well below what California require but just checking. It's actually quite a bit below what I got with my old OEM cats fitted - newer technology I guess :)

Anyway, given what I got with high flow cats, Kai should be able to check if hyperthetically that would have passed had I lived out there. If so Nouvalari high flow cats may be the answer. They're made just down the road from me but think you guys have to go through a US importer (Called Nouvalari USA but not actually part of Nouvalari, I don't believe).

BTW on the anual my main dealer 'tunes' (well, adjusts) the engine based on the emissions, it's part of the routine schedule. Guessing guys doing their own can't always do this but would be a bit miffed if I was getting the engine serviced by a dealer and if failed emissions.

I passed last year with pro cats on a 355 my HC were at the limit but did pass, CO NOX were good
This tells me spark plugs were bad, they were as the fouled the next week on me.

If ONLY HC is high try:
    new plugs
    wires
    fresh oil change

The max allowed in Los Angeles was

    15 mph HC max=52 CO max=.49
    25 mph HC max=36 CO max=.46

Cheers Tim. Not sure how you guys measure your HC, is that parts (or particles) per million? If so looks pretty stringent but your CO2 looks less strict than ours for the whole of the UK. Looks like mine would have been well below LA's requirement with the Nouvalari high flow cats in.

Yes it is parts per million

This level is not set in stone but an average of the car model each year. It does change slightly so older the car gets it does not get phased out of operation by standards

I'd definitely take the time to compare to past year's results, and also look at the limits of previous tests and the limits on the current test. I'd want to double check whether the California limit-numbers have tightened up, or the car is doing something differently.

The reason I'd want to look at all of this, if it were my car, is to see if something with the car has changed drastically. If the car is suddenly running rich, for example, putting in new cats, would just cause the new cats to burn up. (though I guess they wouldn't stay in there long enough to fail, but I'd be worried about damaging an expensive stock set)

    you OBD1 or 2 car?

  17. It's a good idea to see if your emissions levels are slipping year to year or if the restrictions are getting tighter, I suspect you'll find that your falling just outside the acceptable range this year. Perhaps you can try a new set of cats or you may need some other maintenance, such as spark plugs or O2 sensors (mentioned by others as well).

We don't have any used DeCat (Test Pipes) at the moment but we do have them in stock new.

Here is a quick link to them for reference : Ferrari 348 Muffler System

It's worth noting that test pipes such as this are not legal for street use in California.

    Good luck!

    Best Regards,
