Hi All, I’m looking to buy a “project” Dino 246GT. I have partially restored a ‘73 already and am now looking for a more challenging “project car”. I know this is a rather open term so I will try and describe what I think that means a bit more: 1. Complete strip and repaint required, no major body rust that I can put my hand through, rear window in good condition, maybe needs a new windscreen, side glass might need work. 2. Complete new interior required, all gauges with car, wiring loom ok but needing work. 3. Engine, gearbox mostly complete but needing full rebuild. 4. Suspension, brakes complete but needing complete rebuild. 5. History of car mostly known with no major crash damage. 6. Car not currently running. 7. Lower in quality than Hagerty condition 4 car. My questions are: 1. Am I realistic in finding such a car still or not? 2. What is a project car like this worth to buy? 3. What might influence the cost when buying? 4. How often do they come to market and would anyone know one for sale at the moment? Regards Steve Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
welcome as a rookie on here myself, let me offer my very amateur opinion there are very knowledgeable folks on here with years and years deep inside the Dino collector hobby that disclaimer aside i can share with you that i have been shopping for a 72-74 GTS for a few years I have looked at anything that was on the open market and also had brokers sniffing around private collections to see if anything would shake loose (i will tease the fact that i have finally acquired a car and will be posting about it in the next few days) BUT ... I think the odds that you will come across a project 246 are long these cars have been coveted by a passionate following since the beginning and more recently by the money makers and auction houses as their values have soared a bit also remember that between 1969 and 1974 they produced 2,295 GT and 1274 GTS that is a slim herd to begin with I love a story (as do we all) that includes the remarkable discovery of a long hidden and forgotten Dino that's gone to seed so I really hope you find one and when you do please post pictures and details Godspeed my friend
let me also add that i have read this ad over and over this car was originally silver not sure what a "project" Dino would cost but mid 200's isn't out of the question... https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/ferrari/246gt/1893026.html
Congratulations on finding one yourself. My first took, about 6 years to find and 1 year to cosmetically restore with a complete engine rebuild. The car is too good and otherwise too original to do a complete rebuild, so that has become my daily driver while I keep on hunting. It’s amazing what you find and who you meet, when your passionate about something. Good luck with yours. Regards Steve Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Good luck with your search. These non-running 246's are becoming rare species and I haven’t seen any for a good while. Best Peter
