Im looking to possibly purchase a used F430 that is in Texas. I am in California and am unable to physically view the car but am assured by the owner that it has a clear title, is already reg'd in the states thereby needing no mods, has not been traumatized in anyway (cosmetically or mechanically), has had no repairs cosmetically or mechanically and has only 180 miles. His asking price is $160K U.S. which seems below market. Im not certain of the options (carbon fiber brakes, etc) that are on the car except that it is a manual transmission. Is there something Im missing here or are manual transmission F430 cars going for $160K? I am ready to fly to inspect but something doesnt feel right. I have the VIN but havent run a CarFax or other background check as my previous experience with these services were totally inaccurate (other vehicles I checked using CarFax had CLEARLY been severly damaged and poorly repaired yet they had a clear report with no mention of the damage). Please offer any advice or insight as I really want this car.

    Thanks!

$160K? Sounds like you've really done your homework here. Just wire him the money before you do anything else ;)

do a little research and there is just no way a 430 even with manual is only 160,000 especially with only 180 miles. If you are sure the car actually exists I would go and inspect it myself before ever spending that kind of money... but its your decision

There was a 430 on Ebay recently with a "Buy It Now" price of about $160,000. It smelled fishy and has now disappeared. I would do your homework and have the car inspected by a professional first.

For $160,000 I would pay to have it inspected by Ferrari and yourself. I have never seen an F430 at that low price.

    There's a used red/tan F430 for sale at F1 Motorsports in Birmingham for ~~ $355,000.

Anyone selling one for less than half should be viewed with deep suspicion.

US$ 160k, is a great deal if what you are describing is correct. You are saving at least 30k if not more. What I would do is to ask the owner to send you a couple of pictures of the car, interior and exterior, ask him for some special shots, like maybe a closeup of the dash instruments with the ignition turned on so that you can verify the mileage and with that you can confirm that he actually has the car. Once he sends you the pictures, and you can confirm that it is the car for sale, I would take my cash and fly over immediately to the owner, test drive the car, check the car papers and then pay him if all is in order.

This sure sounds like a scam. Where in TX is the car located? We have lots of TX members. Maybe one can check the car out and save you a trip.

I'll bet somewhere in this deal there is a cashiers check for more than the full amount to cover shipping and your valuable time. I would probably bet the person making this post is the one trying to do the scam. Not to many peope that live here use the term "in the states" or quote money in US dollars. It sounds a lot like scam emails that show up in my box every day.
Just my thoughts, but I could be wrong.

This comment causes me some concern- is already reg'd in the states thereby needing no mods. Is this a grey market car? Where, what country, was it originally sold in? Getting past the obvious scam issues, this might be another problem causing the low offer price.

    Proceed with caution!

eBay's eventually going to get busted...and hard...for not verifying ownership for those selling cars.

Compare. The Ferrari Owners' web site verifies our VIN + name + address with DOT before they'll even issue a freakin' password...and that's a **free** web site.

...that eBay isn't doing the same or better ownership verification (hey, Carfax just *isn't* that difficult to do) for cars on which they are making money leaves them open to an enormous future class action lawsuit.

Does it really take a rocket scientist to spot the obvious frauds like this "F430" seller?

Well, he'll fool a few people...because eBay isn't doing due dilligence.

...$40k "deposit" and he'll laugh at his latest mark.

Most of you have the same suspicions that I do which is that this is a scam where the car doesnt exist or this guy isnt actually the owner. To the guy who indicated that I may be the "scammer"- No, Im just a cautious individual looking to scoop up a 430 and couldnt believe the price. I drove one a few months ago and couldnt believe the feeling that it gave me! I fell in love ready to do almost anything within reason to own one. It was a powerful experience and my friends roll their eyes when the mention of it comes up because they know Im going become animated, exuberant, and charged while I profess my love and desire for one :) ! Yes- Actually it is the one that a couple of you have seen on e-bay so theres no secret here and I had a similar e-mail conversation with the alleged owner whereby my specific questions were answered with non-specifics except when it came to the $40K deposit. BTW- the car, Im told, is in Seguin TX so if there are some local brethren who would perhaps take a look, as one responder suggested, to verify the cars existence, I would be appreciative. Let me know and I will e-mail the seller and request an address. Oh also, the car has been relisted on e-bay. Thanks again all- I look forward to your comments!

Good luck finding a sucker to go look and chase this wild goose around. Just forget about it and trust that it's a scam. A too good to be true price is classic bate for a con.

ONE BIG SCAM...I'm sure it's the same guy that was trying to sell a Lambo a few months back. Trust me, he will not send you one thing, other than a phony letter saying how great an Ebay seller he is. I played along with him, and had him down to $10,000...of course, to be deposited in his bank account before he would tell me where I could see the car.
