I have been wanting a 456 for a while but last night I found a Silver on Red Coupe with 27k miles on Auction Access and felt compelld to make an offer. The dealer took it and now I am pretty stoked. I just have to hurry and get my Mondial together to make room in garage. Will post pics and details as soon as it is firmed up.

It's a modern classic. I love mine. I took it out on a date last week and the girl was so impressed! "Wow! I've never been in a Maserati!"

Everyone loves the look of that car. And, they are rare.

Expect so see something in your rear view mirror when you're stopped. It's the people in the car behind you mouthing "Maserati" as they read the logo on the rear!

Nice Car. I like the Silver Red Contrast. Enjoy it everyday!

Now you may want to consider a few modifications....like a Tubi, as it really transforms the car.

One of the best modifications I've done.

I havent heard them on a Maserati But I am sure you will be happy. The car provides for a great deep exhaust note on aftermarket systems.

save some money for the F1 transmission. Try to avoid start and stop situations as much as possible.

The cars are comfortable fast GT cars, handling is not so fantastic, but they are really great car for daily driving without trafficjams

Thought this was Ferrari chat, every one here knows belts n clutches ain't cheap but a fun car is better then extra cash all day long.

One note though, I refrained from asking the clutch question and instead did a search on maserati chat to check on costs. Over there that is as bad as asking the timing belt question on F chat funny.....

Doesn't this motor have timing chains?

Sure does but where the belts are the main cost in upkeep on Ferrari's the clutch is the expense on a maserati

My guy says running costs on the 04 4200 is comparable to my 355... which explains the ridiculous resale on the Cambiocorsas- But heck that's a LOT of car for the dough...

My car needs the sticky buttons addressed but other than that it is just about as-new.

Yeah the value is off the charts- Mine just rolled off the truck today- it is an 04 Spyder with 16K on it- PO just paid to have all the sticky buttons except for the nav unit replaced- four NEW Mas wheels in 09, clutch life is really good and fully serviced... Only issue is somehow the audio amp died on the trip- so we're trying to figure out who pays for that now. But the car is SO good and these are SO cheap- very tough to resist.

The above car has a nice interior color (personally I find the exterior a bit boring). Seems like a nicely optioned car, it has the Auditorium 200 (so if sound doesn't work I would check fuses and the AMP, as well as the connections). It also has Xenon lights, memory seats and the 2004+ wheels. I would guess that it also has real glass in the rear window, if thats the case then even better for you (it has the anti-fog feature, the plastic rear window didn't have that).

Just be careful of the opening mechanism, if its misaligned it will scratch the fabric and water may get in the car. The dealer should be able to fix that quite easily.

Please take the time to read this post in case something applies to you:

Yeah I read everything I could prior to purchasing the car.

The Grigio Alfieri is GORGEOUS in person- I saw 5 or 6 4200s and decided I would only do black or Alfieri- Interior color photographs poorly but the Bordeaux actually looks very nice in person.

Looks like the amplifier is bad- I'm gonna get in there with my meter today and map the pinouts for the system to see if I can install an aftermarket amp.

Look- It's an exotic- I expect to pay for maintenance and the usual stuff that breaks- My car has been relentlessly serviced with a warranty clutch replacement and F1 service just 18 months ago- The owner was really meticulous and made Maserati replace almost everything on the car that was not wearing well- The LCD panel of course did not get replaced and it's a moderate mess- Off to Stickynomore shortly... But window switches, lower console switches, door hardware and ashtray unit replaced under warranty in 2008.

Surprised how rigid the 2004 is compared to the 03 and 02 Spyders- really very nice. The car is really nimble and rides great- front end can get a little bit light in high speed corners- really a world away from the 355, but I'm overall very impressed with the car so far.

Bordeaux is a very nice interior color, I really like it.

Before you spend a lot of money on an amplifier, I would suggest you install an original one, for two reasons: you keep the car as original as possible, a better amp will not improve the sound because the speakers are not that great (especially on a Spyder with a soft-top).

It seems like you have a good car in your hands. If the previous owner was so meticulous, then you shouldn't have any bad surprises.

About the stickynomore, just remember that the icons will not be printed on the buttons, instead they will come with stickers on them. If you don't mind, then thats ok. If not, then your only option is to replace the unit (either with a used one or a new one).

The 2004+ Spyders received a rigidity improvement (along with the glass rear window), you can even go further by adding a brace (but only worth it if you track the car).

I think the 4200 Spyder is a great car overall, and personally I would only change the springs to something harder because the default ones are a bit soft, but that is just a personal thing. As a DD the softer springs are much better for the quality of the ride.

    Enjoy your car!

I think I have the pinouts mapped for the OEM amplifier-

I'll be installing a small Rockford Fosgate amp - Not cause it's better but it's only $90 and fits the OEM bracket- Replacing all the OEM speakers with Poly cone Rockford speakers- and adding an Ipod tap to the back of the NIT- For around $250 I should have the car sounding decent- A far cry from paying the dealer $3600 to replace the front door speakers (Foam surrounds ripped) and replacing the dead amp.

Oh one more thing- Never noticed during my inspection or the PPI- the car has a Valentine 1 concealed in the nose and the display in the rear view mirror- works great! Took a few days to figure out where everything was and how to turn it on...

$3600?? The whole system costs $500 or so, last time I checked with Eurospares (if you are in the US, ask Ricambi, they are the equivalent of Eurospares in the US).

Avoid the dealer for spare parts if possible.
