A few years ago a British Lord, Charles Brockett, was caught in a scam regarding saying his Ferraris were snatched, only to find that he had buried some on his expansive estate. I believe he subsequently served some time in the Graybar Hotel. Anyhow one website I came across today said he had commissioned a fake 250GTO but since that website spelled his name wrong I didn't take that report too seriously. I googled Lord Brockett's name and came across this from the NYT:
    -------------------------------------------------------------

"The New York Times April 22, 2007 wrote this
Lord Brockett commissioned a reproduction of a Ferrari 250 SWB, or short wheel base, to be built on the chassis of a far less valuable 250 GTE 2+2, and to hide the fraud the car was given the serial number of a long-missing 250 SWB. The legitimate car later turned up; Lord Brockett ended up in jail for a variety of offenses, including an insurance scheme involving five cars he had cut up and buried on the family estate. He is now a motivational speaker."
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On yet another site, called Design Addict.com they add more about the Lord's doings:

"The plot further thickened when it was determined that Lord Brockett had sold Jon Shirley of Microsoft 250 SWB S/N 3565 at a then market correct price of about $575,000, claiming it to be the original 250 SWB S/N 3565. The real 250 SWB surfaced in France and some detective work proved that Brockett/Shirley's SWB was actually a welldone replica based on 250 GTE S/N 4015. Another two years was added to Lord Brockett's five year prison term.
    -------------------------------------------------------
PLEASE NOTE:The quote is as I read it but I removed extranaeous question marks that sometimes occur when you put quotation marks in when you are writing it but the computer prints them as something else.

Anyhow interested if Brockett's fakes included a 250GTO Series I or only the SWB, and who built the fake SWB? Was it alloy bodied or steel? I think I passed by a fake SWB at some auction a few years ago but did not photograph it or take notes--it was just pointed out by someone who was "in the know."

As far as I know, Brocket never had a GTO; real, replica or otherwise.During the years that I owned 3527, I visited the Brocket estate and there was no GTO there then. The UK GTO owners at that time, were all aware of one another, and what cars were where. Don

I have somewhere a Classic & Sportscar magazine with a picture of Brocket leaning over the engine of a GTO replica. Have been looking for it every now and then but so far no luck. My wife too thinks there are too many car mags in the library room.

Alas, I no longer have a book I once had that you could look up Ferrari chassis numbers. i think it was fairly inaccurate but better than nothing.
I forgot to add before that I saw Lord Brockett once at Pebble Beach where I believe he was a judge. I also remember an ad featuring a half dozen of his Ferraris, selling some product, a sort of testimonial. All this was, of course, before the "troubles."
