    guys i lost my best friend and buddy tonight. he was my 10 year old weimaraner, cole. he died of a twisted stomach, something that i'm told can happen in large breed dogs. he really was my best friend, always ready to go at the drop of a hat, never complained, and protected my wife and child when i was gone during the day.
    i will sorely miss him. i wish i could treat others the way he treated me. i am humbled and heartbroken.
    i always appreciate the way yall help each other in our time of needs, and i know that your heart will go out to my family and me.

    Some of the hardest moments in my life- loss of a pet, animals fill void in ways that other humans do not. Do not mourn too long, though.
    My wife couldn't walk into our house without crying after losing a pet cat of 18 years.
    Although she resisted getting any new critter(s), we invited a brother-sister feline team into the house shortly thereafter. Not a replacement for the lost- but some of what we missed was more than fulfilled by the new guys. And then some.

    Very sorry to hear about Cole. Our black lab Onyx died about 8 weeks ago. It's tough, but the heartbreak does get easier to deal with. Dogs are unconditional friends and I wish they could live forever.

    I am sorry to see that. Twisted stomach is realy dangerous for big dogs. I have Great Dane and twisted stomach is one of most often problems which can happen.

    Very sorry to hear about your loss. I had recently heard of stomach twisting, and it was recommended by our vet to get my Dane's stomach stapled when getting spayed, which we got done, to prevent exactly that.

    It's always hard to lose a dog who is a friend, companion, pet, and frankly a loved one.

    It's clear Cole was part of a loving and caring family - a dog can not ask for anything more, and an owner can not ask anything more than a pet like Cole.

    You guys shared great times together and I am sure Cole, wherever he is, thanks you for that.



    Get another dog when you are ready - not as a replacement in any way, but because you clearly have a lot of love to give and there will be another dog who will appreciate it just like Cole did.

    Time is your only friend right now. So sorry to hear about your loss. As I have stated before, I REALLY dread 'that day'. Every day will get a little better, I promise.

    I am sorry for your loss. One thing that I am sure of is if you choose to love another dog, that dog will return the love you show him ten-fold.

    gentlemen, thank you all for your support. both my wife and i really appreciate the kind words, it certainly helps. after doing some research, gastric distortion(twisted stomach) can come on rapidly and can cause death in an hour or two. so for any of you large breed dog owners you may want to research this condition so that you'll know how to help prevent it, and know what is happening if it does happen. i had no idea what was going on.
    here is a picture i took of him and my daughter playing with her rubber ducky, my buddy looking on. just a great dog with children, extremely loyal and fiercely protective. but like many of you have said, we are just remembering the good times!

    What a great picture, it is really great to have great memories like that. They will be perfect to share with you're daughter later on in the future.
