Not to put a damper on things but a pilot and attorney, R. Guilford, lost his life in the crash of his Hawker Hunter at the Hillsboro, Ore. airshow last weekend. It appears that he never reached the correct speed to make a take off and tried anyway. Staggered into the air and stalled shortly after.

I'm so far away from that area and so far removed from all that now that I can't suggest anything. I just wonder why he tried to fly when the thrust wasn't there. I feel bad for him and his family.

I dunno much about those old jets but........ I wonder if he got in a situation where he was too fast to bring it to a stop on the runway but not quite fast enough safely take off.

I talked to some of my buddies and there were no speed references like there are for the modern big jets but there would have to be some kind of references to thrust levels of the engine. He certainly wasn't getting 100 % from brakes off and when he pulled off, the left wing stalled and he staggerd away. I'm not totally conversant about the early jets but I know that the Hunter was a good airplane.

I have a good attorney friend for whom I just helped purchase a P-51.

I an hoping that I don't have to report any bad news. He has gone through all the initial training and appears to have a good attitude about the plane.

I'll let you know once he accumulates some time in the bird and I agree to go for a ride.
