Yessir. If they were not Uber expensive I figured why not. This is why I don’t do small projects and didn’t want to drop engine. Knowing me I’d turn it into a hive rebuild of everything.
jamie, I think as long as those gears are not damaged you not have to change them. ask newman what he thinks. he has much experience and knows. but I think he sells his diff without internals so it is no need to change.
Daughter wanted to turn the broken differential into a flower pot. Ground down all the sharp areas, soaked it and scrubbed it clean. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Mine were different both sides, as were the races. Drive both bearings off and check your races before you order.
My bearings on the driver side were destroyed. I’ll try and find numbers. I haven’t removed the race from the passenger side cover yet. Just heat it up a little and knock it out?
Heat with a torch, race side down. Mine fell out after just a minute of warming. The races are different on each side too. I’ve got my part numbers but as Newman said, best to check your actual ones. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
I was able to piece together racer on driver’s side, good thing I saved every broken piece. That one is 362A. However my drivers side bearing is so damaged the number is melted over. 388A? 368A? 568A? 588A? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
So race side down and heat the area around it? Sorry never done a race before. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yes with an acetylene torch. Propane may not cut it and Ive never done it in an oven. Heat that area unit the bearing falls out. Have the new bearing waiting, give everything a quick wipe and drop new bearing cup in. Then let it air cool bearing facing up and maybe set a roller bearing in it to add weight so the cup is fully seated as it cools. If the housing is hot to the touch it may not fit in the gearbox and you may get an inaccurate reading on your preload. I make sure its all the same temperature when I set it up.
I heat them with the bearing facing up because its easier, when it starts to smell like burned oil I pick it up with a rag and turn it upside down and see if the cup falls out.
I sent him my machined race so hopefully he can fit spacers in and out. Maybe a good idea to just let it cool, and then he can fit the machined race in and out. That step really helped me out (book says to have a spare one and machine it...both are things most folks don't have lying around, right?!).
Got it out so I could get the number then just put it back in. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
At another lull, majority of parts come in Wednesday. I ordered all the racers and bearings I’ll need.
I’m enjoying it, so far it’s been all easy mechanical. The fun will be when I have to adjust the differential with impossible to find shims lol
have them waterjet or fiber laser cut then surface ground to the spec you need. Do you have a relationship with a local machinist? Its a reasonably straight forward job for a machinist
If I remember correctly, one side only has shims under the race. Someone on this forum posted that Mopar diff shims work?
