Hello All Pulled my QV out of winter hibernation recently and noticed that I no longer had hi idle at startup like I used to. It starts right away but stumbles badly until she's fully warm, then settles into a nice 900 rpm hot idle. The AAR opening is fine so I don't think that's it. I guess I will move onto testing wur via fuel pressures. I had a new steering rack put in at the end of last season and I also had him check my mixture because I felt it was running rich. Could messing with the mixture screw on the FD mess up the high idle ?? That's the only thing that was touched on the CIS side. Any suggestions as I dive into this would be much appreciated Oleh
Hi Oleh, sorry you're experiencing trouble with your QV. It sounds like you checked your auxiliary air valve which is the primary mechanism by which the car starts with a high idle. If the valve is stuck closed it could result in normal idle at start up but if everything else is working appropriately I wouldn't think that a failed AAV would result in the additional symptoms you are describing. You mentioned that before putting the car away last season you thought the car was running rich and your original post suggests that perhaps the mixture screw was adjusted? Was the WUR manipulated in any way? The fact that the car runs well once warmed up makes me think that your cold control pressure is off. As I'm sure you are aware, the WUR is what allows the car to transition from cold control pressure at start up to warm control pressure after several minutes. I would recommend testing the fuel pressures as it sounds like you are planning on doing. I'm not sure about the QV, but on the 328 cold control pressure should be somewhere between 1.9-2.3 Bar and warm control pressure should increase to around 3.3-3.7 Bar after about 5 minutes. The readings depend on temperature and barometric pressure and the above figures represent measurements at sea level with a temperature of 18 deg C (65 deg F). Good luck and be sure to report back after you take your measurements. If you find that your WUR is malfunctioning let me know and I can help you trouble shoot further.
Is your warm-up light lit at first start? My '83's temp sensor in the coolant tank went kaput & the car things it's always warm. No fast idle.
Thx for the insight guys. Sounds like checking fuel pressures is the next step. Clyde, I checked the switch on the coolant tank and its OK, so unfortunately sounds like I need to dig deeper. Will post findings once I get the time to do the pressure check. Thx O
