Alright, lets get one thing out of the way, I was reckless and stupid today, my fault, my apologies.
I'm a p-plater, had my licence for 3 months or so, but not anymore
I was in Sylvania in Sydney's southern suburbs this afternoon (2pm), on the Princes Highway going north just before Tom Uglys bridge. I was behind a bus, and moved to the right, to overtake it. I dropped down a gear and accelerated, cleared the bus and then on the left handside, stopped on the roadside was a policecar. He walked out onto the road, whipped out the stop sign and instructed me to pull over.
    "any reason for you speeding?"
    "no"
"thats 94 in a 60 zone, which is 4 points, loss of license, 3 month ban, $576 fine" then he showed me the radar, i accepted the reading
    "ok" i feel screwed
"when your licence is returned you will have 1 point for a year"
"if you wish to contest the matter in court, blah blah blah," then som brief discussion, then a stern warning to slow down, and that was it.
I drove straight to the office, told dad everything and he said "hope you like walking"
he knows it was dumb, he knows ill punish myself enough over it and pay the fine then got his warning about slowing down and being too confident"
So any avenues of appeal or words of wisdom to help me learn everything i can from this mistake?

yep... If you'd have been in a Ferrari, you would have been well in front of the bus and not had to overtake it...

Get dad to buy you a Ferrari so you can keep your licence longer next time.

    words of wisdom...

    err....

well, what do buses do every 5 minutes or so....??

    Stop, don't they.....

    So.....

    Next time.....

WAIT FOR THE 5 MINUTES AND THEN PASS IT WHILE IT'S STOPPED.

    wow,

i lost 11 points in a week once.

but the clincher in that week was 120k's in a 70 zone, which was 6 points and a fine. so that sat me on 1 point for 3 years.

but it was the same as you, just overtaking someone and bang, hit by a cop with a gun.

the thing you should be more worried about rather than losing your licence, is that here in Australia is a phenomenon where if you travel even 1 k over the limit your likely to kill everyone in a 100k radious (according to the authorities anyway), so thats whats more disturbing.

but seriously, speeding doesnt kill, its the sudden stop that hurts

my commiserations, it will be a tough suspension period, im just so glad ive never had to go through one.

As FerrariFixer said, i probably could have waited, would have been more than 5 mins, so i agree that it was excessive and reckless, ban and fine will be hard to swallow, and the premium hike for only being 17 will be tough

    live and learn though

The only reckless part was overtaking when you didn't know the cops were there.

if you couldn't see them, or even the possibility of them or someone else being hidden there... you shouldn't have passed.

So, all you did wrong really was not driving to within the distance you could see.... and the lack of thought is what you need to learn from, not your actual action

it's a bloody two/three lane road... the bus is just an excuse for giving it a squirt... admit it :)

That's right. When you have to break the limit, make sure you can see well up the road, and look for any cops behind you as well (as far behind as you can safely see).

But I don't see why you needed to be doing almost 100km/h in a 60 zone; I think that's a little bit too enthusiastic for a simple overtaking manoeuvre.

Well, we've all been naughty and had a 'squirt' at one time or another, so you're not alone. Next time, keep a look out for cops, and do it when safe. Personally, I (hypothetically) save it for more rural locations, and not suburbia... there's just too much risk of hitting something/someone or getting booked. Time and place is the key. :) Hypothetically speaking of course. I never break the speed limit.

If you want a real reality call, try crashing your pride and joy into a large stationary object. THAT will make you drive a little more conservatively.

Yeah, but cars can be fixed. The feeling of what if I had been travelling just a touch faster and hit a bit harder never goes.

thanks ash...j15 don't stress too much over it..we have all had fines before and you will look back in 10 years , have a laugh and realise you should of told him to f*ck off. as for the speed thing there have been many times when i have driven like a real dic*head around the streets as i was young, stupid and didn't realise the impact my actions could have on others. there were times i reflect on that i was very lucky not to kill myself or others. now when i see young guys who get killed i don't get angry at them , just a sense of sadness . they were the ones who weren't lucky and paid the price. now that i'm in my 30's i don't speed or drive recklessly on the road as i am aware of the consequences. guess someone was looking out for me and wanted me to have a long life. i wish governments would make it compulsary for all new drivers to take driver training. simple stuff like learing to regain steering under brake lock up , distances to stop at 60 , 70 k's and the greater distance required etc as young drivers aren't aware of this stuff which could help them save their life and their friends. young drivers aren't hoons , mostly just uneducated. think i've blabed on enough
